New Hybrid Species Developed from American Paddle-fish and Russian Sturgeon

  Hungarian scientists succeed in creating a new breed of fishes called Struddlefish. They were able to use American paddle-fish to fertilize the eggs of Russian sturgeon. According to scientists, they thought that their experiment would fail because these species hadn't met each other or had been in contact with each other for a long era. Apart from this, both species were adapted to different habitats, so they assumed that they would fail anyway. However, this wasn't the truth. Struddlefish is a new species in the ecosystem, a hybrid of paddlefish and Russian sturgeons.

  Scientists name this process as gynogenesis. The new hybrid species (Struddlefish) can live, survive, and feed. But they can't ensure the continuity of their kind. So, they will eventually end up becoming prey in the food chain. Struddlefishes possess characteristics of both fishes that make them look weird from an angle but still nature's phenomenon.

Russian Sturgeon

  The Russian sturgeon is native to the Black Sea and can also be found sometimes in small lakes. These species are similar to salmons in the area of reproduction. They travel from sea to rivers for reproduction, and after releasing the eggs, they return to the sea with the respected river routes. The species can be found at the beds or sometimes in superficial waters. Russian sturgeons can grow about 6.9 feet long and weigh 115 kilograms.

American Paddlefish

  American paddlefish are habitually found in freshwaters. With a smooth, slim body structure and a long rostrum on its mouth, it is often called as the freshwater shark. Unfortunately, these are the only species of the paddlefish group when others faced extinction. These fishes can grow as long as 7 ft and can weigh a maximum of 50 kilograms. Paddlefishes only feed on planktons in the water due to their toothless characteristic.

Current threats

  Both fishes live in different regions of the world, but they possess some things in common such as habitat loss and pollution. The species are fighting pollution and habitat loss, and if necessary measures are not made, then the species will eventually go to extinction. Pollution has also affected aquatic life, and paddlefish and Russian sturgeons are proof of this.

  So, we conclude at Struddlefish. Will the new idea of the hybrid generation of these fishes be helpful to the parent fishes, or will it be a threat to the food chain. A struddlefish can't reproduce, and thus they can only play the role of predators and prey in the ecosystem. Can they help avoid the extinction of the two species?

Scientists proclaim that studying Struddlefish and the parent fishes can help them to stop the extinction of the parental species.
