Hoy tengo el placer de compartir hermosas fotografías que cuentan una interesante historia, se trata de una estructura que ha pasado desde utilidad defensiva militar hasta recreativa, cultural e histórica por su valor arquitectónico medieval y tradición defensiva de la ciudad de Lagos, distrito Faro del enclave regional Algarve en el extremo sur de Portugal, donde recientemente estuve de vacaciones. Espero que sea de tu agrado, si has estado aquí podrías dar tu opinión o comentar para conocer un poco más de este bondadoso sitio que es sostenido por el abrazo eólico del océano Atlántico y sus frías aguas color turquesa.
Today I have the pleasure to share beautiful photographs that tell an interesting story, it is a structure that has gone from military defensive utility to recreational, cultural and historical for its medieval architectural value and defensive tradition of the city of Lagos, Faro district of the Algarve regional enclave in the southern tip of Portugal, where I was recently on vacation. I hope you like it, if you have been here you could give your opinion or comment to know a little more of this kind site that is supported by the wind embrace of the Atlantic Ocean and its cold turquoise waters.
En 1189 cuando el Califa de Córdoba, Abd-ar-Rahman III se apodera de lo que es hoy el territorio de Lagos, sabe que la ubicación estratégica de su ruta marina le hacen ser pretendidas por potencias extranjeras que buscan expandir sus fronteras en busca de recursos y esclavos, así que apuesta a la seguridad rodeando el asentamiento con dos órdenes de murallas y torres. In 1189 when the Caliph of Cordoba, Abd-ar-Rahman III took possession of what is today the territory of Lagos, he knew that the strategic location of its sea route made it be sought after by foreign powers seeking to expand its borders in search of resources and slaves, so he bet on security by surrounding the settlement with two orders of walls and towers. In this way, it began to build a belt of stone, mud and masonry of more than 2 meters thick with a height of 7.5 meters and more.

Because of its traditional record of invasions by other peoples, including Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and finally Portuguese, it merited this defensive bastion of which only vestiges remain that have been declared National Heritage for their historical interest, for example the Arch or Gate São Gonçalo that dazzles with its two watchtowers at the main entrance.

Esta estructura se comenzó a construir durante el reinado de Manuel I y debe su nombre al patrón de los pescadores en Lagos, que curiosamente es la única ciudad que no asumió a San Pedro como su patrono. San Gonzalo fue un hombre con profunda devoción a Dios y el servicio católico, entre sus obras más significativas se atribuye la milagrosa multiplicación de los atunes.
This structure was begun during the reign of Manuel I and owes its name to the patron saint of fishermen in Lakes, which curiously is the only city that did not assume St. Peter as its patron saint. St. Gonzalo was a man with deep devotion to God and Catholic service, among his most significant works is attributed the miraculous multiplication of tuna.

These stony vestiges tell a story, in its blocks of stone and mud are engraved in the clicks of horses, clash of skirmishes and thundering of enemy and defensive cannons.
Pasar por este arco es atravesar el umbral del tiempo para proyectar los épicos momentos de guerra y destrucción natural a causa de fenómenos naturales como el terremoto de 1755 que devastó gran parte de la ciudad; no obstante, conservó su concepto urbanístico clásico y cultural que le abrieron las puertas a un dinámico centro de atracción turística.
To pass through this arch is to cross the threshold of time to project the epic moments of war and natural destruction caused by natural phenomena such as the 1755 earthquake that devastated a large part of the city; however, it preserved its classic urban and cultural concept that opened the doors to a dynamic center of tourist attraction.
Habiendo recreado nuestra atención y conocimientos con estos muros de barro y mampostería de piedra que datan de siglos, nos apetece degustar un rico almuerzo.
Having recreated our attention and knowledge with these mud walls and stone masonry dating back centuries, we felt like having a delicious lunch.
Por referencia mi esposo me convence que la mejor opción en gastronomía la tiene el restaurante The Garden que está cerca de la zona y posee la mejor variedad de carnes y pescado asado.
By reference my husband convinced me that the best option in gastronomy is The Garden restaurant which is close to the area and has the best variety of meats and grilled fish.
Así que tomé la sugerencia y quedé complacida del servicio, calidad de la comida, bebidas y precios.
So I took the suggestion and was pleased with the service, quality of the food, drinks and prices.
Mi esposo ordenó carnes mixtas asadas mientras yo preferí un jugoso pescado a la brasa que estaba exquisito.
My husband ordered grilled mixed meats while I preferred a juicy grilled fish that was exquisite.
Luego del almuerzo disfrutamos de refrescantes bebidas que fueron perfectas para continuar la planificación de actividades para el día siguiente.
After lunch we enjoyed refreshing drinks that were perfect to continue planning the next day's activities.
La suave brisa y resplandor de los fotones de luz solar se combinaban perfectamente con la actividad turística en la zona, entonces decidimos caminar un poco por la playa para disfrutar de las finas arenas y sonido armonioso del mar.
The gentle breeze and glow of the photons of sunlight combined perfectly with the tourist activity in the area, so we decided to walk along the beach to enjoy the fine sands and harmonious sound of the sea.
