Born in the Ijaw town of Ekiagbodo in present day Delta State Nigeria, Pepper Clark is a Nigerian poet, playwright, and literary scholar. He is one of the most formidable African poets of the last century. A former professor of English Literature in the University of Lagos and visiting professor at Yale University, J.P Clark is well known for his poems that promote the traditional African values and appraise the effects of colonialism and westernization on traditional African societies.
