IELTSwith me: Writing P2 - Practical skills or theoretical knowledge? Formal qualifications are no longer needed?

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

Following up to the series IELTS with me, I would like to share another post about Job which seems a very common topic in IELTS writing and also can be considered as a not too hard topic for newbie like me to get to know academic writing style.

I have been told that I should not use "you" in IELTS writing, so this time I tried to totally get rid of it. I think I've made a progress. xD

Topic: Today's job market it is far more important to have practical skills than theoretical knowledge. In the future, job applicants may not need any formal qualifications. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many people suppose that academic qualifications will be no longer needed in the future as employers seem to prefer candidates having empirical skills to those who just acquire knowledge theoretically. However, I do not totally agree to the said statement. I believe that both should be appreciated fairly, and formal education degrees is still necessary and valuable when applying for a job in some certain areas.

To begin with, there are quite a few reasons why people normally express a strong preference for practical skills. Firstly, the intended purpose of learning something is to make use of it. Hence, the whole study thing can be considered pointless if we do not know how to turn it into reality. Secondly, it is matter of fact that companies tend to reject non-experienced applicants for the sake of saving enormous cost from training. And thirdly, from the perspective of job seekers, showing that they are capable of putting knowledge gained in schools into practice will definitely bring them a head start over other candidates in landing a dream job. Because it is somewhat obvious that employers only want to pay someone who is able to do his job, not those who know a bunch of concepts and theories but cannot utilize it effectively.

However, theoretical knowledge is not totally outweighed by experimental one and it still has an irreplaceable role in competition of particular jobs. Theory are basis of practice and for some occupations such as lawyers and doctors, profound study and research are fundamental requirements that determine whether they can apply what they learnt into practice. A diploma, therefore, will be certification proving that they have obtained a certain amount of required knowledge. Without a formal degree, it would be hard to make sure that an applicant is qualified to enter some professions.

In conclusion, despite the fact that job market’s demands are in favor of hands-on skills, it does not mean that theoretical knowledge and academic qualifications will be superseded any time soon.

Is it true that normal qualifications are no longer needed.jpg

I have read this model answer for reference and actually learnt some word choices from it. Link: https://writing9.com/text/5cd7f04cb29e690de4101514

I hear Elon Musk saying something similar about engineers. It will take some time to value the importance of such models.

The system is rigged but we should not fight it.
