IELTSwith me: Writing P2 - Having a good university degree guarantees people a good job.

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

To initiate a series "IELTS with me", I would like to share my very first writing for IELTS part 2. It took me so long to familiarize myself with IELTS writing style which I have never known before.

My task is not only to write about a random topic, but also to use the following assigned phrases:

1. To acquire/obtain (knowledge/experience/skill)
2. To master vital soft skills
3. To enhance my resume
4. To put knowledge gained into practice
5. To build/to cement a strong relationship with somebody

Let's have a look and please leave a comment and show me what more I need to improve. ^^

Question: Having a good university degree guarantees people a good job.
To what extent do you agree?

Answer:

It is believed that completing a university education with a good degree is definitely a skeleton key to open better career opportunities. However, the said statement appears to be contentious and from my point of view, being a distinction graduate can be a good start but does not make having a good job become a sure thing. Therefore, this essay will discuss how necessary a university degree is and what more it takes to secure an excellent job.

To begin with, a university degree is what showing your learning outcomes and certifying that you have acquired a certain amount of knowledge by spending 3-5 years to study in high-level education. And when it comes to a competition to get a job, having great achievements in the university will make you stand out from those who do not have any certificate proving their ability. Not to mention that most companies consider having a bachelor’s degree is a precondition to be eligible to apply for a job. Additionally, for some huge earning professions such as lawyers or doctors, a university degree is also a must.

However, as there are numerous graduates with many of them have excellent achievements, it’s worth considering what will make the difference in competition and what helps to enhance your resume other than a good degree. As a matter of fact, among all the candidates having the same background of education, employers are normally impressed by experienced ones who show how they put the knowledge gained in university into practice in relevant fields. Furthermore, mastery of vital soft skills matters as well. Equipping yourself with important skills such as teamwork, time management, problem-solving, etc. absolutely helps to put you ahead of the game.

In conclusion, having a good bachelor’s degree is necessary but if you think it is sufficient to secure a good placement, then you may be the one who fails in landing a dream job.

@majes.tytyty how do you think about my new series? haha

I like it! It might prove quite helpful for many students who are wondering if they should enrol in university or if they should continue their higher-education.

I myself have a BA. My university education proved beneficial in certain ways, but I must say that the biggest advantage I got from it was simply having the diploma. Since I worked overseas (in Japan, India, and Singapore), it was necessary to present my diploma in order to get a visa allowing me to work in those countries.

At the same time, I know many people who never went to college or university, and who have done very well in terms of career. That trend is increasing nowadays. More and more students are realizing that they can learn more, and learn quicker, by avoiding the formal education system of "school / college / university." (That includes home-schoolers)

I'd say the choice is up to the individual, taking into account her/his particular career path. For a select few careers, a university degree is necessary. For other careers, one might be helpful. But for more and more careers these days, a university degree is pointless, and a waste of time and money. (Especially with today's outrageously high tuition fees!!)

Oh. Advice from a university graduate is to tell me how pointless a university degree is. Haha. U have made a good point tho. Thanks, @majest.tytyty.

I do feel bad for students currently paying full tuition during quarantine as an important part is to meet a good network of people.

you don't need to take IELTS, right? you are native already. 😅

A blog about academic writing can cover a variety of topics, from writing about your personal experiences to analyzing current events. The key is to provide an original perspective. The most effective blog posts use the author's experience, identity, education, and knowledge to comment on current events. For example, a student who plays women's hockey might have unique insight about the gender pay gap.
