My husband was extremely happy, literally the happiest 'kid' on earth when his mother, which is my mother-in-law (duh) came to deliver a big woven bag of stuffs. Inside were all the ingredients to make spring roll aka 'poh piah'. We usually got to eat this on special occasion but this time we got to eat this on our usual day, because mother-in-law felt energised to do all the preps.
Let's see the ingredients she prepared
I asked mum how long she took to do all these, she said from cutting, slicing, washing, peeling, cooking, it took her 3 hours. Not counting in the time she went put to buy stuff. Thank you, mum. And all we need to do was just wrap them all and ate the yumminess and love.
Show you the 'break down' 😉
Turnip stir fry
This was the main ingredients, carefully julienned the turnip with knife, not slicer, for nicer texture, stir fry with onions garlic, dried cuttlefish and sliced pork. Alot of work, so I was reluctant to cook this dish, but lucky enough for my mom-in-law.
Chopped pork belly
This one was boiled pork belly till soft then chop them up. No seasoning was required as the fat and meat itself had its own juiciness and taste.
Fragrant Stir fry egg with Shrimps
These was like co-ingredients with the rest, seasoned the egg with salt and pepper and stir fry with shrimps. Super duper yummy we could eat it on its own because we all love eggs!!!
Sauces & condiments
The black one is shrimp paste, bought at supermarket. The chilli she pounder chillis, garlic, ginger on mortar and add lime, balanced with some salt and sugar. Super duper yummy too! Coriander, of course if you can't live without. Bean sprouts, just blanced in water for awhile. Fried onions which she did it by herself too, chopped those rose onions and fried them till golden brown and crispy.
Lettuce
She even cleaned and prepared lettuce for us. We were blessed.
What we do?
Yes! We just wrapped those ingredients into the pohpiah skin and pampered our taste buds and stomach. Haha. Literally just ready the spring roll skin, put the ingredients one by one and wrap. And eat!
Usually, first step was to spread the shrimp paste sauce and chilli sauce, but this one I was preparing for my son, he asked for no sauce. Then top with lettuce then the ingredients you wanted and wrapped.
My husband's awesome wrap
My husband was all the while been awarded the best spring roll wrapper, he could made super yummy bulky wrap and the wrap would not tear. And tell you, he must have some magic hands, somehow his wrap was always more delicious than others. Haha. So I would ask him to wrap for me.
