We need to get 3Speak and HIVE in front of Tyler Winklevoss ASAP...

in GEMS4 years ago

Anyone have any ideas on how to get in touch with Tyler Winklevoss?

Tyler has been dropping hints for several days now that he is not a fan of the centralized social media companies.

Yes I know there is a long history there, cough cough Zuckerberg/Facebook... but irregardless...

The other day Tyler flat out said he wants to bankroll a better alternative to centralized social media sites like Facebook/Twitter/YouTube.

Check it out:

I'm not sure about you, but reading this, I can't help but think this sounds so much like 3Speak.

Or if we had smart media tokens launched, it could be anything built on HIVE really.

His brother even joined in with that line of thinking as well...

But wait, there's more...

In an interview with Decrypt, Tyler said the following:

“A platform where users have full control of the content they create.”

“A native token should accrue to those who bring their resources to bear on the platform, such as creators getting paid or 'tipped' for the content they produce, users for their engagement. Both creators and users should have a say in governance, which will invariably lead to interesting debates and forks down the road—which is a good thing. Those who have different ideas can always opt-out and start their own platform, similar to schisms that we see in religion."

“The pandemic has reminded us just how little control we have over our data, and how much power and influence we've entrusted to a very few. These centralized platforms make up their own guidelines with respect to 'misinformation' and dissent, many of which are arbitrary and at odds with the principles that our country was founded on.”

Does that not sound an awful lot like HIVE to you?!

Alright, did @theycallmedan get in front of Tyler recently? ;)

Tyler is literally saying the exact same things that Dan has been saying for months and months now.

Perhaps with HIVE being a truly community driven project, now is the time to get in front of Tyler any way we can and let him know that the alternative to what he's talking about does already exist. It just needs to be polished up a bit and some money to back it wouldn't hurt as well.

Anyone have any ideas how we can get HIVE and 3Speak in front of him?

It sounds like the time is now to strike!

Stay informed my friends.

Also need to get @jpbliberty’s Crypto Class Action lawsuit against Facebook & Google in front of Tyler.
Damages in this case will be a massive transfer of wealth from centralized censorship companies to decentralized crypto projects and communities.

What is the status of that thing anyways? You wait too long you are going to miss your chance... striking now while Facebook is trying to launch their own coin adds a lot more credibility to your argument... get that thing going already!

See the latest update here: https://peakd.com/crypto-class-action/@jpbliberty/update-on-crypto-class-action-over-usda1-billion-in-claims-signed-up

Legal things move slowly, not at crypto speed, but we have made huge progress.

We have until January 2024 before statute of limitations becomes an issue.

What is the huge progress you have made? Getting people to sign up? That was the easy part. It's been over 2 years since you have been talking about this... what is the huge progress?

No, getting people to sign up is the hardest part!

The value of the claim is what is most important to professional litigation funding firms. You need a decent legal case, but after that, its all about the value of the claim.

Its much harder to get people to sign up for class actions than you might expect, which is why the Australian High Court's recent decision disallowing common fund orders and forcing litigation funders to do book builds was such a blow to the industry. https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/high-court-delivers-blow-to-booming-class-action-industry-20191204-p53gov.html

Big litigation funding companies typically spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on book builds, which is why Courts initially allowed common fund orders to avoid these costs (which are passed on to claimants as reductions in payouts).

I know this might seem a little counter-intuitive, but the actual Court work is actually the easy bit because over 95% of funded cases settle before trial.

I think people need to realise that there are degrees of decentralisation. It would be helpful to know to what degree they want to have a competitor to youtube that is "decentralised" as the specificity of their answer will be crucial in developing the pitch and/or understanding what the big players are really looking for.

Good point. I think anything that has more than one player calling the shots is a good start. Where that ultimately leads to is what we are hoping to find out.

Yes! This sounds exactly like what he's looking for. Though I guess we should be cautious by inviting in another wealthy entrepreneur, not to repeat another Justin Sun drama. This is my attempt to coax him in anyways...

@tylerwinklevoss; an awesome idea, and timely too, given how much more conscious we have become about our privacy over these few years. What you're looking for, is https://t.co/7tBaRGVV2f, a decentralised video sharing platform built on https://t.co/XCoemrPTGi #HIVE #HiveIsAlive https://t.co/d79f9l5n7m

@tylerwinklevoss; the #HIVE community fought hard to protect the principles of decentralisation, and free speech. It was a painful split from our old community at #Steemit #DLive, but we had to do it after its independence and values were compromised. Now, we're steaming ahead...

Awesome work. Keep doing things just like that!

we should be cautious by inviting in another wealthy entrepreneur, not to repeat another Justin Sun drama.

Exactly. We do not need wealthy pricks to come in and throw their weight around. Communities grow and i do not want actors like this. Or let them come, we fork once again and i sell my Hive and buy in on a new fork run by genuine community.

It's a difficult balance to keep, but there's nothing wrong with having wealthy entrepreneurs throwing their backing behind a platform like HIVE. Though we need to find the right one to come alone, as the whole Justin Sun debacle had thought us rather well.

I'd rather have 10000 thousand small active backers than one big wealthy and ambitious tbh that will start throwing his weight around. For some strange reason people want decentralization and then they need a centralized leader to push all forward for them. I just do not see value of wealthy guys in this setting. But it is perfectly ok to have a different opinion :)

I want you to educate me @jrcornel
Is threespeak for everyone on hive or it's just for some set of people?
Regards

Everyone.

Anyone and everyone.

Thanks for the response.

... talk about riding on hopes and dreams ... why don't we just Zuckerberg to save Hive, i'm sure that will turn out swell.

It's a little different considering he is actually talking about wanting to be a part of and fund a project similar to what we already have going... It's not just grabbing billionaire names out of thin air and trying to attract them.

And when they invest couple hundreds of millions of dollars, our smart witnesses will freeze their funds ;)

It's not quite that cut and dry... but I do get the irony.

I was just joking.
We don't need to do much. They'll join us eventually anyway.
Like exchanges add hive to their trading. Even without any fee.

I sure hope so. The only thing I fear is that we get to the point where we are not inclusive enough and someone else that is open to everyone and everything grabs the masses and our project continues to stay niche while something very similar to us thrives...

And that's up to us to create chain that people like, that is fair, to create tools to fund promising projects, that produces great content and content is the king.

What do you think Winklewoss can actually add to the community, what can they bring to the table?

Wow. Seriously.

It literally sounds like he's talking about 3Speak or HIVE...

He is using the exact language they use. It is almost plagiarism. I would have to downvote him for copy/paste haha.

Yep, almost sounds like Dan has gotten to him already. :)

Hey, @jrcornel.

So, we go from one billionaire to another set of billionaires? :)

I didn't know this, but it looks like they're deep into crypto, and have their own exchange, Gemini, based in NYC. Sounds like a perfect fit to me, for both 3Speak and HIVE in general.

Only if we can do it without too many strings attached. We don't want to centralize the very blockchain we're trying to decentralize even more. :)

Yep, though this one would be a much better fit. The other billionaire has made it clear he doesn't care much about the same things that Tyler and Dan have been harping on for months now.

Can you tweet your post to him. Not sure if Twitter would block it, but seems like a good start. :)

I remember when this popped up on Twitter. @theycallmedan and a bunch of other hivers spammed that tweet about hive and 3speak. I don't remember Winklevoss interacting with any of our tweets though.

I hadn't seen that. Well, we need to keep at it. The interesting thing is that he specifically mentions being pitched by a team... would love to have @theycallmedan get some face time with him.

Same here.

that's something nice coming from such an important person in the actual digital times... I think the way to make him aware of HIVE is by showing this social network outside, via Radio, or with youtube, instagram and twitter content creators telling about HIVE, more than what is actually made

Yep, I agree. Things like the #POSH movement are a good start.

I wrote a post similar to this earlier today. I didnt see yours until just now. Not a bad thing to be writing about the same thing I guess...greater chance the message is spread.

Yea, your post looks extremely similar to mine.

I must appreciate such initiatives where just simply trying to reach to someone and bring him in a project could be the foundation of a great future collaboration. Nice step and great job!

3SPEAK is a good alternative to Youtube. I'm already using it.

Technically 3Speak, Minds, LBRY and dTube are not decentralized. They are not censorship-resistant platforms, they are anti-censorship platforms. Their hearts are in the right place, but the tech is not where it needs to be to have earned the reputation for being decentralized.

How do you define decentralized? People seem to have all sorts of different levels of decentralization that they use for the definition of that word.

Hi @jrcornel, you are right that decentralization is a spectrum. However, for us to ever turn the dream of decentralized, cenrsorship-resistant economics and liberty into a reality, we must not water down the definition.

If so called "decentralized" systems are not much more decentralized than traditional systems, why use them? All of the social platforms I mentioned are no more decentralized than your traditional corporation. They have a good attitude but not good enough tech.

How do you feel about Libra's plan? Would you call Libra's validator system decentralized? I wouldn't. Each validator is hand-picked. Still, the amount of consensus validators is 4.7X that of Steem/Hive. I had hoped that the witnesses were going to learn from the Steem event and adjust the new chain to be more decentralized, but they are not doing it.

It can be said that Libra would be more decentralized than the senate, because while it would have 100 validators or votes, each vote would be a representation of a corporation making up a collection of directors and shareholders. Still, its just 100 votes.

But if a blockchain is only as decentralized as the current traditional system, there is no point to do it. So we need something bigger than that.

Proof of Work with ASICs grows centralized over time, so sadly, that doesn't seem to work so well. Modern POS systems (not delegated POS) do seem to meet that standard. In Ethereum 2.0 every person with 32 ETH can become a validator, allowing for very many participants. Energi currrently has a POS system using master nodes and anyone with just 1000 NRG can run a master node, allowing for many participants.

Steem/Hive could do it too, but they would need to adjust their system. For example, currently the 21st witness is rotated, but a better system would be to have all 21 rotated constantly. This means profits is less predictable for individual witnesses, but getting rid of a "top witnesses" system and allowing for random rotation of the 21 witness selected out of hundreds or thousands of witness nodes can definitely improve decentralization and thus censorship resistance. At the present time, Steem/Hive is no more decentralized than your average university board, and in a few ways its quite a bit less decentralized.

I'm really not trying to be harsh, but it is important that we get decentralized systems right. If we allow "decentralization" to become nothing more than a buzz word so that we pump our bags to make money, the original purpose will be lost and no real innovation will be made.

The pandemic has reminded us just how little control we have over our data, and how much power and influence we've entrusted to a very few.

It's not the pandemic that brought this up. We knew this years ago.

We do not need Winklevoss. Why do we need another Justin Sun? To fork once again?

If they want to be a part of the community, they can create an account and start sharing post like this to their network.

Where does the urge to take decentralized platform and put it into centralized hands come from? And why? What can he do for a decentralized community?

Anyone have any ideas how we can get HIVE and 3Speak in front of him?

I am sure they know of Hive and Steem and 3Speak already, they did not come up with the concept of decentralized media by themselves.

lets hit up their tweeters and tell them whats up?

It would be a bit dangerous to have them onboard so early if they are looking to become major investors. They could buy enough stake to dominate the network, but then again so can binance or huobi.

Yep, go for it.

And I don't think it would be dangerous. Clearly they are looking to be a part of a decentralized project, not own a centralized one...

A ton of people beat me to it! It seems he isn't really paying attention to the responses....or maybe he is? I wonder.

We really need to get more users, everything else is rocking! I am putting my efforts into on-boarding through projects that are both onchain and off....I just wrote a case for youtubers to slowly move over to Hive rather than jumping the youtube ship right away, and now I am starting a project to onboard users from language exchange apps! Gonna post on that tomorrow!
