Hey Hive open mic family :)
So this weeks theme ,Slow Down made me think alot about what I should play.
I dont have many slow songs that fit the theme, most of my songs are picked and strumed pretty fast.
I did however find this song earlier in the week while looking for old folk songs.
The song I am playing is called Down in The Valley , its a very slow paced song that always instills a deep sense of tranquility in me when I sing it.
There are many versions of this song ,its been covered by many artists over the years and even appears in the Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder Movie Stir Crazy.
I am sure it is an old plantation slave song which would have been sung to ease the hardships of plantation life.
So for week 10 of this wonderful open mic event I want to share this beautiful old song with you all.
"Down in The Valley"
Down in the valley valley so low
Hang your head over hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow love hear the wind blow
Hang your head over hear the wind blow.
Roses love sunshine violets love dew
Angels in heaven know I love you.
If you don't love me love whom you please
Put your arms 'round me give my heart ease
Give my heart ease love give my heart ease
Put your arms round me give my heart ease.
Write me a letter send it by mail
Send it in care of Birmingham jail
Birmingham jail love Birmingham jail
Please send it in care of The Birmingham jail.
Build me a castle forty feet high
So I can see him as he rides by
As he rides by love as he rides by
So I can see him as he rides by.
Down in the valley valley so low
Hang your head over hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow love hear the wind blow
Hang your head over hear the wind blow.
Down in the valley valley so low
Hang your head over hear the wind blow

Feeling so grateful for you in my life, brother, and this way of connecting virtually, through sharing songs. Your friendship feels like good medicine to me at this moment. I really appreciate you for the silence you introduce in the beginning. And the song is just the right fit for where I'm at in life at this moment. Yeah, I think your mention of this song's origin is really significant too—the slow rhythm of plantation life.
For me personally, I've been feeling a desire to show support for the #blacklivesmatter movement, and I haven't found clarity yet on how best to do that. And now, through your song, I'm able to go there with my heart and connect compassionately with those struggling through racism and similar injustices of today and yesterday. And I can feel the medicine in the melody, which was likely felt by every voice who ever sang or heard this song. Feels important that you sing it, and I hear it, and we feel it. And maybe through this song and the way it resonates, we take one step closer to Harmony, Love, Truth, and Justice in this world.
Wow Cabe Im not really sure what to say here this heartfelt comment almost brought a tear to my eye...
Im not used to getting feedback on the videos I make.Sometimes they get a decent payout and that's normally the only feedback I get.
I appreciate you for taking the time each week to give thoughtful feedback about my open mic entries. It means alot more to read those than to get a payout.
Thanks alot for this!
