About myself

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)
The first lines of any text are always the hardest ones, especially when talking about oneself. What to say first? Let me start with what drives me. Many things do, but it is mainly my love for languages and writing.

It started when I was a kid. Apparently, I was drawn to other cultures even back then. There is an embarrassing anecdote that I am daring to share here. I was five years old. My family and I were spending our summer vacations on the island of Margarita, in my home country, Venezuela. Tourism was its main economic activity. Foreigners of many different countries visit the island every year. One day, we were at the hotel pool and I saw a girl talking to her mother in English. As a Spanish native speaker, I felt curious, so I approached her and said “hello”, which was the only word I knew at that time for conversation in English. The girl replied once but then I repeated “hello”. She walked away and I chase her repeating myself “hello! hello! hello!”.

I hope this story was not as embarrassing as my sister tells it. It is a bit blurry for me, but it makes me believe that my passion has always been there. Not only the language itself, but also my interest in others, in people from different countries, cultures, speaking other languages, coming from other pieces of land on this Earth. I guess this is what my little self felt, and continued to feel until today.

I am 32 now, and I am a Translator. First, I applied to formal Foreign Affairs studies, but eventually ended up studying languages at the university. I got a degree in Translation and Interpreting.

These studies and the exercise of my career helped me understand others more than I would have by graduating in Foreign Affairs, I think. I worked as a Translator and Interpreter for the Foreign Affairs Ministry. I often had to interpret meetings between foreign officials and I considered myself as a bridge of communication between cultures. Seeing that interaction and mediating with them, as well as translating many texts on different topics and from different world corners, made me have a broad view on multiculturalism. So I am proud of my decision of becoming a language specialist.

This decision also led me to literature, not only because it was part of the curriculum but also because I was able to read books in its original language, which brings me to my second passion, writing.

Writing, as other forms of Arts like music or painting, is a means to express our thoughts and feelings. It is a place where you can find yourself, a place that is yours and yours only, unless of course you want to share it with the world. This would be our case. We use this platform to share our thoughts, feelings and ideas with others. A place to read, write and even grade ourselves.

I write pretty much about everything, even short stories and poems. I will share some of them later on. I hope they are good enough.

So this is what I do and like to do. I am all about words.
As per the aspects of my personality, I like to think I am kind, caring, creative and funny. I would like to be less of a scatterbrain or disorganized, though.

I have three older sisters, two of whom are married with children, which makes me the aunt of four great nieces and nephews. I am soon to be married, though children are not yet expected, maybe in a couple of years. My mother’s family is quite big. She has nine brothers and sisters. Most of them with children and some are even grandparents, so are my father’s two siblings. So you can imagine how big my family is.

Among other interests, I like reading, traveling, having delicious meals with nice people, a good cup of coffee. I love nature, which is where I find God, as the little things we are given.

I skimp on material things rather than on moments, because at the end, that is what you carry with you. Moments create memories and memories cannot be lost or stolen. They are the pieces that makeup our life puzzle. So I cherish them as I cherish the people I love. Who does not feel joy when remembering playing with the sand on the beach when they were kids? or having coffee with friends? or their first kiss?…I guess what I am trying to say is that there is nothing more interesting than life itself.

I will wrap up by saying that I might have left things unsaid but there will be time to get to know one another in this sort of coffee house for content creators. And I thank @rutablockchain, @bluemist and @danielvehe for making me part of it.

Oh, I forgot to tell you my name. I am Rosana, but my family and friends call me Rosa, or Rose if you like

See you all next time

Ahora tengo 32, y soy traductora.

Me llamo Rosana, aunque mi familia y amigos me dicen Rosa.

Los veo la próxima
