After reading the first chapter I thought that this one would break the spreading mediocrity in the shounen manhwa scene but as Redice Studio keeps releasing chapters it turned into a slight disappointment. In the beginning the readers would be introduced to a world being plagued by monsters known as calamities. Just by that statement experienced readers could already infer that this would likely be some generic sh*t. The struggle between humanity's heroes and the invading evil is the bread and butter of most action manhwas and there's nothing wrong about that. Although I must say that it's a saturated plot and to succeed you either have to be a pioneer or something that would break the normality. Based on the story alone Return of the Disaster Class Hero is something that fell into the average category. If not for the main characters innate characteristics the liven up the atmosphere it would be just like the others, something you would read for some generic fun.
Lee Geon the main character of the story has some thick plot armor to be honest. But it's delightful that it's not presented in a cliché or annoying way. To balance out the evil that has came for their world heroes emerged which were called zodiac saints. They are basically the equivalent of heroes and each one is blessed by their own divinities of gods. We knew that there are 12 zodiacs and yes Lee Geon with his legendary plot armor is the 13th. He is not blessed by any god but is stronger than all of them which brood both fear and envy. Well, that is true except for Sagittarius saint Hugo Otters which is his best friend ( or slave according to him ). The status of these saints are second to none in the human world but most of them are rotten to the core. After reading for a while there are a few that are still redeemable but most of them are just plain trash and would likely serve as fertilizer for the MC's growth.
The final boss portrayed in the beginning was a calamity known as Crimson Eye. It's an evil entity with one of the highest danger levels ever recorded. The danger levels are blue, green, yellow, orange, red and black. Blue is the sanctuary of a god so it's quite impossible for calamities to appear in this zone. Green is the general safe zone it's where most cities are. Yellow to black are filled with monsters with black being the worst. Even zodiacs don't dare to venture there alone. Crimson Eye which resided in the Demon Tower was a black level calamity and when the zodiacs realized that they were having a hard time fighting the red-eyed giant they all flee. Lee Geon solo-ed the devil. He won but it's not an easy win even for him. Also, he was stabbed at the back after defeating the Crimson Eye.
Lee Geon was made a valiant hero that sacrificed himself for humanity. But in reality he was trapped in the tower. The Crimson Eye was a fake and there was tower master controlling everything behind the scenes. It had the ability to re-animate any monster/calamity that died in the tower. With Lee Geon's top tier plot armor he survived and killed the tower master. After 20 years he freed himself vowing to take revenge. Most readers were disappointed because after Lee Geon's release he became 'normal' physically. The coarse face filled with scars and his balding hair was nowhere to be found. His newfound handsomeness is something that fans were not fond of simply because it ruined the character or should I say the only redeeming feature of this story.
All in all Return of the Disaster Class Hero is quite bland. I felt that it's a wasted potential but compared to most of the materials I'd still say it's decent. The art is great but the plot degrade so far. I'll give it an 8.5/10 for now.
