A pretentious British settler arrives conquering the lands of the new world, his greed and avarice for gold makes all the native population declare war, willing to destroy it just to obtain the so precious mineral. This post is about Governor Ratcliffe, main antagonist of the movie Pocahontas, with my own style I designed a striking and colorful version of this evil character. Come with me to observe the step by step of how I make this design. Without further ado, let's get started.
Un pretencioso colono británico llega conquistando las tierras del nuevo mundo, su codicia y avaricia por el oro hace declarar la guerra a toda la población nativa, dispuesto a destruirla solo con tal de obtener el tan preciado mineral. Este post se trata del Gobernador Ratcliffe, principal antagonista de la película Pocahontas, con mi estilo propio diseñe un una versión llamativa y colorida de este malvado personaje. Acompáñenme a observar el paso a paso de como realice este diseño. Sin más que decir empecemos.
Process / Proceso
Sketch / Boceto
I start the drawing with the sketch, in this I use a pencil brush, and I modify the size of the tip to obtain fine lines, I make soft and fast strokes until I obtain a figure close to the final design I have in mind. In different layers I design the governor's hat and sword.
Empiezo el dibujo con el boceto, en este uso un pincel lápiz, y le modifico el tamaño de la punta para obtener trazos finos, realizo trazos suaves y rápidos hasta obtener una figura cercana al diseño final que tengo en mente. En capas distintas diseño el sombrero y espada del gobernador.
Outlined / Delineado
Here using the same pencil brush, I modify the size of this increasing its thickness but only a little, now using as reference the layer of the sketch, I create a new layer where I will make the delineation, I divide the drawing by sections.
Acá usando el mismo pincel lápiz, modifico el tamaño de este aumentando su grosor pero solo un poco, ahora usando como referencia la capa del boceto, creo una nueva capa donde voy a realizar el delineado, divido el dibujo por secciones.
Colour / Color
I put all the layers together and start with the colouring, I use the same technique as in the previous step, separating the drawing by sections and applying the colour in different layers. In this drawing I wanted to experiment with a slightly more saturated color palette, so the colors look more intense.
Junto todas las capas y empiezo con el coloreado, uso la misma técnica del paso anterior, separando el dibujo por secciones y aplicando el color en capas diferentes. En este dibujo quise experimentar con una paleta de colores un poco más saturada, por eso los mismos se ven más intensos.
Shadows / Sombras
We go on to apply the shadows, I use the eyedropper tool to copy exactly the color I'm going to shade, I apply a new cut-out layer in mix-multiply mode and with the airbrush I apply those shadows, decreasing the brightness and increasing little by little the saturation of that color. Here I take advantage to place the texture of the dress and the sword.
Pasamos a aplicar las sombras, uso la herramienta gotero para copiar exactamente el color que voy a sombrear, aplico una nueva capa de recorte en modo mezcla multiplicar y con el pincel aerógrafo voy aplicando dichas sombras, disminuyendo el brillo y aumentando de a poco la saturación de dicho color. Aca aprovecho a colocar la textura de la vestimanta y de la espada.
Lights / Luces
We use the same technique of shading, but this time increasing the brightness and lowering a little saturation of the color, I create another layer of cut but this time in a mix mode add, and with the airbrush I apply the areas of light. Also in this step I like to apply a brighter color to the outline to highlight the drawing even more.
Usamos la misma técnica del sombreado, pero esta vez aumentando el brillo y bajando un poco saturación del color, creo otra capa de recorte pero esta vez en un modo de mezcla añadir, y con el pincel aerógrafo voy aplicando las zonas de luz. También en este paso me gusta aplicar un color más brillante al delineado para resaltar aún más el dibujo.
Background / Fondo
This background I wanted to recreate a nocturnal environment that was in tune with the character's colors, I made a degradation of the violet color, from a dark tone to a lighter one, in another layer and using a watery brush I drew some light clouds using the same violet color.
Este fondo quise recrear un ambiente nocturno que estuviese en sintonía con los colores del personaje, hice una degradación del color violeta, desde un tono oscuro a uno más claro, en otra capa y usando un pincel acuoso dibuje algunas nubes tenues usando el mismo color violeta.
Details / Detalles
To further enhance that touch of evil characteristic of this villain, I designed some flames of the same violet color, which wrap them up framing their presence in the drawing.
Para realzar un poco más ese toque de maldad característico de este villano, diseñe algunas llamas del mismo color violeta, las cuales los envuelven enmarcando su presencia en el dibujo.
Materials / Materiales
The tools I used for the drawing were the following:
- Android tablet.
- Capacitive pen (Stylus).
- Ibis Paint X program.
- Brushes: Pencil, Airbrush, Fuzzy, Marker.
Las herramientas que use para el dibujo fueron las siguientes:
- Tableta Android.
- Lápiz Capacitivo (Stylus).
- Programa Ibis Paint X.
- Pinceles: Lapiz, Aerografo, Difumino, Rotulador.
