Greetings đź‘‹ GEMS community, to the promoter of this contest @wiseagent and to all HIVE.

Going from “The Amazing Spider-Man” series to a film directed by Mel Gibson, clearly, shows acting development in all its glory. And, thank God Gibson decided to sign Andrew Garfield as his lead, since there is not a better person that could have embodied the spirit of Desmond Doss better than him. “Hacksaw Ridge”, in its prime inception, is a film about war, perseverance and love. But its profound meaning lies ahead of these themes. It is actually a very dark movie, in the sense that it depicts the two sides of the human nature: love towards your ideals, and hatred towards those who think differently. In this Second World War picture, Desmond Doss decides to enroll on the Army as a pacifist combat medic. Molded by his religious teachings, as well as his medical background, Doss only aspires to help and safe those in need, and what a better way to do it than in a war? However, his only condition to this is to never touch and use any kind of weaponry, no matter the situation. It is somewhat a “double edged sword” scenario.

Doss’s convictions were admirable. Nonetheless, the other Army members did not consider this to be as astonishing as the audience may think. Now, this is where it gets dark. The chore of the film is a battle of integrities between what Doss considered to be right and what other people thought of his actions. And, unfortunately, the second option was more popular than the first one. To say that they tortured, kicked, and punched Doss would be an understatement. They thought that what he was doing was retrograde, incongruent and against the Army’s values. His only weapon was his Bible, and they even teared that apart. Nonetheless, Doss’s spirit was unbreakable, and his determination was as strong as ever.

Imagine being bullied at school, with no friends, with no allies, with no hope. Now, imagine that, multiplied by a thousand, but, instead of a school, it is a warzone, with dead bodies all around you, where people that you know are injured and possibly will not make it out of it. That was Desmond Doss’s situation. And, even though they hated him and made his life a living hell, he saved them, up to the point where he almost died in battle. Finally, they started respecting him and considered him a hero and a true leader. But the point is that the film actually depicts the dark side of the human nature: envy and hatred. History is full of examples like this. Trying to break people for their beliefs has been a common practice. Just because they do not accept who you are or what you do, because they exemplify it as abnormal action or way of thinking, gives people permission to segregate you; to make you suffer; to make you think that you are worthless and that you have an unknown future among those who rule it. They treat you as a sheep, while they think they are the wolves. This movie was outstanding form every single point of view; no wonder it was nominated for the 2017 “Academy Awards” for best film. Garfield perfectly embodied what a suffering man looks like in the brink of loosing everything that he stood for, surrounded by people who tried to corrupt and destroy him, but eventually winning them by fighting for what he truly believed. The film was dark, with a touch of hope and a palpable tension that makes the viewers scream of stress. It is one of the best films ever made.

Unusual choice for this week, but I understand your point of view.

Good luck in the contest, @machiqui63.

Horror movies are not to my taste. It was difficult for me to broach the subject this week. Thanks for your good wishes @wiseagent
