La primera sustancia que recibe el recién nacido por parte de la madre es el calostro, esta es una sustancia de color amarillenta, podríamos decir que es la primera vacuna del bebe ya que esta estimula su sistema inmunológico el cual le proporciona anticuerpos protegiéndolo contra virus y bacterias, de enfermedades como cáncer, meningitis, artritis, asma, diabetes los lactantes alimentados con la leche materna tienen menor probabilidad de adquirir este tipo de enfermedades.

Por otra parte también contribuye, a mejorar la salud de la madre después del parto, favorece la recuperación del útero ya que al momento de que el bebe succiona el pezón de la madre libera una hormona llamada oxitocina el cual ayuda a que el útero vuelva a su normalidad, disminuye la pérdida de sangre después del parto evitando la anemia, por otra parte la lactancia materna ayuda a la madre a que tenga menos probabilidad de sufrir de cáncer de mama, y acelera el proceso de recuperación.
