Changa Manga Forest - World's oldest man-planted forest

The Changa Manga is man-made planted forest and among world’s oldest irrigation reserve. It was planted in 1866 by British foresters and is of international importance. Its total area comprises of 12,510 acres. Its first purpose was to provide fuel for railway engines.

It is located at Tehsil Chonian which is 75Km away from Lahore. Initially there were trees of Dalbergia sissoo, which is provincial tree of Punjab province of Pakistan. Later different trees were added like Morus, Bombax ceiba, Chinaberry, Cottonwood and eucalyptus.

There are also nurseries which are planted for expansion of the forest.

This forest is name after two brothers; Changa and Manga. Both of them were dacoits and had made secret place of living in dense forest. They used to loot traders and innocent citizens who passed through that region. Later both were captured by British peacemakers.

The forest is home to many species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. There are wild boars, deer, monkeys and rare species of Gyps Vulture. There is restoration center to manage the population of Gyps vulture.

There is a large forest park in this forest which has lot of recreational facilities for children, men and women.
