Introduction
Procrastination causes stress, anxiety and more. We all fight procrastination from time to time. Whether it's cleaning the garage or doing that project at work it may be a constant struggle for some people. Here are 7 ways to get you started with procrastinating less.
1. Do The Most Difficult Task First
Most of us tend to put off doing difficult tasks and as such we procrastinate. Instead of working on the marketing plan which is due tomorrow, we decide to check our email instead. However, once you developed the habit of doing the toughest task first, you are able to tackle the problem head-on. Once this task is completed, you feel a sense of achievement and you are more motivated to tackle the simpler tasks.
2. Distractions Need To Be Eliminated
Another way to combat procrastination is to eliminate distractions. You'll be more likely to finish what you need to do if you reduce the number of distractions surrounding you. Try to declutter your desk and office space. Turn off your phone, go somewhere quiet, and listen to classical music or white noise to blot out any background noise.
3. Establish Deadlines
Setting deadlines is another way to avoid procrastination. Many people fall into the trap of saying, "I'll do it tomorrow or eventually," but , tomorrow or eventually never comes. It's critical to set a deadline for when you want a project or task done. Try to finish your projects and assignments ahead of time. That way, if anything unexpected occurs, you'll still have time to finish them.
4. Take Responsibility
Another way to combat procrastinating is to hold yourself accountable for finishing tasks or projects on time, studying. While it's easy to come up with excuses not to work and to take needless or excessively long breaks, catch yourself before you do. Keep in mind that you are solely responsible for the tasks and projects assigned to you and you have deadlines to meet. If you need assistance with self-accountability, ask a friend or colleague to keep track of your objectives, deadlines, and achievements.
5. Break the task into smaller steps
Part of the reason we procrastinate is that we instinctively find the work to be too demanding. Break it down into small chunks, then concentrate on one part at a time. If you're still procrastinating after breaking the task down, break it down even further. Your task will soon seem so simple that you will say to yourself, "Hey, this is so simple, I might as well just do it now!"
6. Just Do It
It all comes down to action in the end. You can strategize, plan, and hypothesize all you want, but nothing will happen unless you take action. There are people who keep whining about their problems but, at the end of the day, refuse to take action. If you want to get something done that you've been putting off, you need to get a hold of yourself and do it. Stop waiting for the right time to get cracking and so just do it.
7. Be Mindful Of Your Triggers
When a task is tedious, frustrating, tough, confusing, unstructured, or lacks personal meaning or intrinsic benefits, we tend to delay our work. We can overcome our procrastination urges by reversing these triggers.
The next time you find yourself delaying on something, pay attention to the triggers that the activity is evoking and devise a simple strategy to overcome them. Try to find ways to make the tasks more enjoyable, interesting and meaningful. As a result, a lot more can be achieved.
Conclusion
It is good to look at procrastination from a different perspective. Start thinking of procrastination as a solution to your problems instead of a problem itself. A better question to ask is "Won't it feel good to have produced more hours this week, compared to last week?" instead of "Why am I so lazy today? Once you are able to stop procrastinating, you will be able to achieve more and be happier.
