... I believe what is good about America's legacy was derived from its beginnings. Flowing out from the First Great Awakening in the Colonial Era, leading to the Revolutionary War in the fight for liberty, from the tyranny of "Mother England." The man who I would name as my hero, Jonathan Edwards, was credited with starting it, with his sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God".
The Second Great Awakening led by revivalist Charles Finney, by contrast, is considerably more controversial, for a number of reasons. There are those who credit him with "fanning the flames" of a drive to abolish slavery, which led to the Civil War. Much has been and still could be written about that time in our history ...
