If you've been joining my Guess the WIP contest, then you might have known about my attempt to make a 20inch Crochet Rug. The slowpoke that I am, with all the side-projects that my daughter keeps requesting, it has already taken me almost a month to complete this rug.
But the good news is I am now in the pompoms part of the project. Which is basically the finishing touches. You read that? FINISHING TOUCH! Woot! Woot! So now, I'm going to share how to make fluffy pompoms made out of polyester yarn. It's not typically what is commonly used when making a pompom, but being that this is the only material I have on hand, this will do. And it really did look good. There are just a couple of steps that need to be done.
First, you need to determine the size of the pompom you want to make. I wanted mine to be 2 inches in diameter. Then make 2 circles that size. On one circle, I poked a hole in the middle. Set that aside. You'll need it for later.
Then we make a U-shaped carton. The size should be a little wider than the circles. This is where you will wind the yarns.
The next step would be winding the yarn into the u-shaped carton. But before you get started with winding, set a yarn about 12 inches at the bottom part of the U-shape. Then start winding around the sides. You can wind up to 150 rounds but that's going to make your pompom a bit too thick. I did 120 rounds.
Once you've wound up enough yarns, tie up the center using that 12-inch yarn you laid at the bottom part of the U. Gently remove the wound yarn from the carton. Cut the sides. Make sure you've cut all the loops. Don't cut the yarn you used to tie the bunch.
Once you've cut all the loops, place the bunch of yarns on top of one circle, the one with the hole at the center. Slip the long yarn into the hole. Then lay the other circle flat on top of the bunch of yarns. Make like a burger with the yarns as your pattie. Make sure to hold the yarn burger firmly.
Now start cutting the edges. Cut any yarns that exceed the circle. A very sharp pair of scissors is very helpful. Now I know why my mom yells at me when I use her scissors intended for her fabric for my paper dolls. I am cursing under my breath every time my scissors don't cut very nicely during this pompom making process. My husband used my fabric scissors for everything else except fabric. After this pandemic, maybe I should return him to his mom. LOL. JK.
Oh, before you start cutting, make sure you lay a big piece of paper, I used manila paper, but you can use newspaper, an old magazine or what have you. This part of the process is going to get messy.

Once you've cut all the excess yarns, remove the circles. Shake the pompoms a little bit. Then switch the strands sideways to expose any excess yarns. Make another yarn burger but this time you concentrate on a different side.
Shake the pompoms loose, trim off any strands that aren't supposed to be sticking out. And there you have it. Your fluffy pompoms. I made 8 of these. What's left is to attach them to the crochet rug and that is the finished product!
