This morning, when I woke up, I noticed a special visitor perched in the living room: a dragonfly. Little Alma was amazed by the fluttering insect, running back and forth chasing it. Children's capacity for wonder is wonderful, an innate trait that drives them to explore the world.
Dragonflies are harmless to humans. They usually travel alone and feed on flies, mosquitoes, butterflies, and other smaller insects. Although dragonflies can be annoying when they get trapped indoors, banging against windows or any light source, I prefer to deal with them rather than a cricket playing hide-and-seek.
Waking up and noticing the dragonfly was a curious discovery that made me reflect on the symbolism often attributed to these insects. According to the tradition inherited from our ancestors, these insects bring good luck, so they should not be killed but allowed to fly away, granting them their freedom.
Although I am not superstitious, Alma and I managed to get the dragonfly to leave by opening the front door without harming it. This reminded me that, according to popular belief, seeing black butterflies inside the house is a bad omen, so they should be eliminated, as should flying cockroaches, which, although their presence is not associated with any symbolism, I have never known anyone to let live after disturbing the peace.

La pequeña Alma estaba sorprendida con el insecto que revoloteaba, la niña corría de un lado a otro persiguiéndola. Aunque no soy supersticioso, entre Alma y yo logramos que la libélula se fuera al abrir la puerta principal sin hacerle ningún daño. En eso recordé que también, según la creencia popular, observar mariposas negras dentro de la casa constituye un mal presagio, así que se deben eliminar, al igual que las cucarachas voladoras, que si bien su presencia no está asociada a ningún simbolismo, no he conocido a nadie que las dejé vivir tras perturbar la tranquilidad.
