1st step - black knight from e6 to f4 check. So white king xan't move anywhere and only two steps possible for white. One is to kill the black night with pawn from e3 to f4 and another step is moving white rook from f3 to f4.
What if white pawn was moved, then black knight is moved from e4 to f6.
What if white rook is moved, then black knight is moved from e4 to g3.
So both steps leads to checkmate!!

There you go, playing Nf4 creates either an obstruction or a deflection that's going to lead to mate next. Interestingly, there's more than one move that leads to mate in two here.
