Preparing for the arrival of the monsoon rains

(can you see the rainbow?)

It has been cloudy for the past few days now. The climate is hot because the humidity has increased with the heavy rain clouds hanging over the place. The southwest monsoons start from Kerala and usually on June 1 without fail except for the past few years when climate change has affected the start date.

Nature balances

With the drastic reduction in pollution because of lockdown, it seems that nature has found a balance again and the rains are all set to start.

Well, it is not like it rains now and then and you enjoy the cool climate and move on with your life.

In Kerala, the monsoons start and do not sort of stop for three to four months.
There is even a monsoon tourist package but with the COVID this year, that is certainly not happening.

The only fear is that COVID cases may increase tenfold with the sudden change in climate and non-stop rains.

Food you must enjoy when it rains

  • hot tea and snacks
  • steaming hot rice and curries
  • coffee and cookies
  • toasted bread with loads of salted butter and peppered veggies
  • hot chocolate and cake

There are many more and if you like you can add to this list. It is better to prepare at home and eat because rainy season does not go well with eating out, especially street food, and that too in this COVID era.

Insects and small mites

We live in a forest area and so we get these small rain time insects which are quite a nuisance really but the lizards are loving the extra food. Yikes.

Precautions to be taken

  • make sure to wear dry clothes
  • do not consume cold foods or if possible, leftovers
  • try not to get wet in the rain
  • damp walls could be dangerous, so if you have old electric connections, make sure to test it for shock or replace the wires
  • worms, scorpions and snakes could get into shoes and helmet if left outside, so please double-check before you use it
  • buy candles, matchsticks in advance as power connections could be affected
  • ginger root is good for colds and flu cure. Prepare ginger tea if possible and have a little daily
  • crystal sugar and honey are also good for the rainy season. Keep it handy
  • try to avoid heavy foods during night meals as the cold and wet climate could affect the digestion and also eat well before midnight

I hope the COVID phase ends soon and we can all return to our normal lives again.

Interesting post @sayee, I'm curious about something:
do not consume cold foods or if possible, leftovers
So what has eating something cold got to do with anything, especially during the hot, humid monsoon season?
I would think that, if you have the means to keep food/drink cold, it would be:

  1. safer (less chance of spoilage)
  2. better to help stay comfortable in the heat
Just trying to understand my friend.

ah yes. It gets a lot damp in here during the rains. Damp to such an extent that the walls and floors start to ooze water and power goes out often thus leading to total blackout and it won't be hot anymore once the rains start. So, a safe bet is to eat hot soup like foods. Thanks for supporting.

If this situation continues for a few more months, I'm sure nature will find us way to heal nicely. But we humans won't let that happen.

that is true Bala. We always interfere with nature and then suffer the consequences

Yes exactly. A life alongside the natural beauty is a perfect life. I wish to live that life 100% someday. 😀
