Borderline Personality Disorder

in GEMS2 years ago

Today I will talk about the people we live with in our daily lives.
Since it will be a bit long and some parts of it will be an academic article, I hope you will read it for information purposes.
First of all, I would like to start with a case example from a psychiatrist.
A person driving a car crashes into someone who is suddenly in front of him.
Reaction 1: Gets out of the car immediately and helps
Reaction 2: He's running.

Which of these two people do you think is sick?
In fact, both of these reactions are the behavior that every person can show. However, if we examine it in the dimension of the disease, the person who gives the 2nd reaction, which we consider as an abnormal movement, may not have a mental illness. In other words, the person may have fled because he was in a state of fear and panic. In order to distinguish this, this case is sent to a psychiatric examination and it is determined that the person who made the abnormal behavior has a mental personality disorder.

I think it is useful to know some definitions so that we can understand how this is so:
It is very difficult to define which behaviors are normal and which are abnormal in psychology. Behavior that is customary, in accordance with the place, time, situation and rule, is considered NORMAL, and otherwise, it is considered as ABORMAL.

Abnormal people mostly;
-Behaviors, attitudes and thoughts are unreal.
-His behavior exceeds the tolerance limit of the people around him.
-His relationships and communication with people are broken.

We all have genetic traits that are passed on from our ancestors to us from our family. We call of this heritage in our personality as "TEMATER". We realize that some of us are more cheerful, some of us are more irritable, and some of us are called very calm by our environment.
"CHARACTER" is a structure built on this foundation. This structure; what we see and evaluate, what we believe about our surroundings and ourselves, our thoughts, the conclusions we draw from events and what we learn is a pattern of our beliefs and rules.
Then we can say: "PERSONALITY" is the combination of our temperament and character. It is the answer to the question "what is he like" in our interaction with the world throughout our lives.

The fact that we are experiencing a problem in our environment or within ourselves does not indicate that we have personality pathology. Certain criteria must be met in order to identify a personality disorder in terms of our personality traits.

Personality disorders involve significant distress or impairment in at least two of the following areas:

-The way you perceive or interpret yourself and other people
How you act when dealing with other people

  • The appropriateness of your emotional reactions
How well you can control impulses

Personality disorders, on the other hand, are a chronic condition that occurs when subjective inner experiences and behaviors deviate significantly from the expectations of the individual's culture.

This marked deviation is not inflexible, is not due to a significant event or distress, is not self-mutilating, is not due to the direct effects of a substance or medical condition (such as a head injury).
Individuals with personality disorders, on the other hand, use only a few of these strategies in an inflexible and maladaptive way, no matter what situation they encounter. The ability to learn new strategies and to select and use them according to the original situation is almost non-existent.

People with personality disorders have problems with social adaptation, not being able to make friends, and regularly experiencing problems in their work or school life. People with such disorders should be treated by applying to psychiatry outpatient clinics in hospitals.
Personality disorders are psychological disorders that prevent a person from thinking clearly and cause abnormal changes in their behavior. I want to talk about the most common of these.

Because these people may be people who have mixed in the society and have relationships at a certain level, and sometimes they are loved by the people around them. However, this does not show us that they are not sick.

Borderline Personality Disorder
Also called borderline personality disorder among personality disorders, this disorder manifests itself with unstable moods. In interpersonal relations, there is a situation of raising to the sky and putting it to the ground. They cannot control their impulsive behaviors and these patients are prone to violence. Since he has no anger control, he harms the people around him.. They exhibit erratic behavior.
In addition, they take pleasure in hurting others with their planned behaviors. They generally have no conscience and enjoy intimidating the people around them.

Such behaviors are sometimes supported by the environment, as if they were mistaken for their personality and character traits. However, this is a huge mistake. Because if the person exhibits an abnormal attitude and behavior other than what is normal and harms the other party and enjoys it and cannot question his conscience, it is a mental illness. There is a fine line here. Every person can make a mistake and unintentionally hurt the other person (as in the traffic accident example above), but if he feels sad, crying, etc. when he evaluates this internally, this is not a disease but a normal human behavior.

For this reason, patients with personality disorders, especially those who have characteristics that can harm the environment, should be treated in private inpatient clinics.

However, the biggest problem is that such patients do not accept treatment because they deny that they are sick.

Stay Healthy!
