What's the first major news story you can remember living through as a child?

Warm greetings dear Hiveans of the #memoirmonday, an initiative forwarded by @ericvancewalton to refresh our mind with good old memories.

Back to the title, regarding the major news story you remember as a child.

Every day is a new beginning, a fresh start indeed. It was early one morning, in the year 1984 and as usual I was getting ready for school. I carried my school bag, my lunch box and after bidding goodbye to my Mom, I was off to school.

Agra fort, New Delhi

During that time period, our Prime Minister was Ms. INDIRA GANDHI. A strong personality who was called the "Iron lady" of India. A determined personality, with her voice being her strength. Due to which she had too many enemies, rather than friends, within the country.

Our school timing was 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The classes were going on in full swing. Our lunch break was from 12.30 p.m. to 1.15p.m. The bell had gone for lunch. I along with my friends sat beneath the Banyan tree, which was our usual place while having lunch. After lunch, in order to avoid going to classes earlier, we used to chit chat until the bell goes.

The bell rang for the next class and within minutes we were in the classroom. As soon as the class started, we could see few teachers meet up here and there, some of them running up and down the stairs in a hurry, few of them showing gestures etc. Little did we realize what exactly was going on.

Within minutes of starting the class, the next bell rang. It definitely was a surprise, some of us thought it was a mistake by the peon. But no, it was not. It was the last alarm for us to leave the classroom to our respective home. Finally, a teacher in charge came into our classroom and gave us the sad news, that our PM was shot dead.

Though it came as a shock, some of us were waiting for the next day holiday. Maybe I was a student of Grade 6 during that time. The seriousness of this matter was less felt than getting a holiday.

Looking back, while writing this article, I feel that we have lost one of the most wonderful person, who led our country. An iconic personality, I should say.

I remember teachers warning us not to roam about, instead reach home as early as possible because their might be political problems on the road and commuting would be a big problem. Within minutes of reaching home, my father too reached early. He was so upset for the next few days, disturbed and distracted saying we lost one of the powerful leaders of the country.

The text written is my own and the photo of our late Prime Minister was taken from Wikipedia. . Agra fort at the capital city New Delhi was captured by my son, on our short visit to New Delhi.

Thankyou so much for your time. Happy Weekend !

Strong leaders our parents looked up to, a great loss to a country and the people never knowing what direction life may have taken had they lived.

Very very much true. We lost a wonderful leader, though late people realised it. Thanks for visiting.

I remember this unfortunate day! The news made headlines in the news for almost a week in the US. Thank you for your contribution to Memoir Monday!

Oh! Nice to hear that because it shows her personality and public influence on the whole.
