Indian web series has set the tone for the audience a bit higher. Indian TV industry lagged behind Bollywood for decades, but now new promising directors and producers have taken their game into a different league. With the freedom of censorship and a competitive market where there is an immense audience, creators are not afraid to think out of the box and make realistic content while visualizing social taboos, culture, and corruption instead of creating the same old melodrama or family drama. Lack of censorship really helped to articulate society and present it to a webspace. Even Netflix started making Hindi web series realizing the demand of India. On the other hand with this freedom of the creators, orthodox people of India are furious claiming that web series are fabricating the Indian culture and articulating it in the wrong way (Patal Lok for example).

Here is my pick of the top 10 must-watch web series in Hindi language. I know there are other very popular and great web-series. I just prescribed the list of the top 10 of my most favorite ones. If you think any other series deserved a spot here, please feel to comment and let me know. It was so hard to narrow it down to ten, so I added one as a bonus. I am not ranking them either. So here the top 10 Indian web-series:
Kota Factory
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is so hard to crack where millions of applicants try to get in and only a few can make it. If you have watched the movie Super 30 or Chicchore you already have the idea that how tough the competition is. Kota has rightfully gained the reputation for grooming the applicants for the IIT exam.

The 5 episode black and white TV series with the lead characters visualized the real scenario of Kota. In the show the 16 years old Vaibhav goes to a new town and settles there for upcoming years without family and meets new friends Meena, Uday, and more. Jitendra Kumar aka “Jeetu bhaiya” plays an exceptional role as their mentor. The amazing cinematography soothingly adapt with the realistic script which hooks the viewers through the entire show.
The show is free available on YouTube and TVF Play’s website.
Scam 1992
History is the greatest spoiler. “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” is based on the infamous stock market crash of 1992 in India. The SonyLIV crime drama web-series is an adaptation of the book “The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away” written by journalist Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu. Pratik Gandhi who plays the lead role of Harshad Mehta totally nailed it. The theme song of the show is very attractive and it got popularity through social media since it has been used in many memes. The series is apparently the best series of 2021 yet.

The background of the series sets back to 1980’s to 90’s. The filter of the show, the characters, the cinematography and the story all soothingly balanced with the scenario. Harshad Mehta a stockbroker shook the share market and journalist Sucheta Dalal exposed him as he was the main culprit of India’s worst financial scam of all time. The series is about the rise and fall of the Harshad Mehta.
The 10 episodes long series is available on SonyLIV.
Pitchers
Four friends who are tired of their daily habitual life start to dream big with their “one big idea” of their new business start-up. Keeping this startup idea ahead they quit their life as corporate slaves and started executing the idea in full swing to be owners of their own company. The show portrayed the actual struggle of the market and the thrill of entrepreneurship with a funny tone. The show stars familiar faces like Jitendra Kumar, Naveen Kasturia, Arunabh Kumar & Abhay Mahajan who really get into their characters. The script will amaze the audience and hook them through the entire 5 episodes.

Cubicles
This series is kind of out of the ordinary. Not so popular and many may wonder how it made it to the list. Well, this is the top ten of my favorites. I truly believe if you watch this series you would love this. The show displays how people are working in their cubicles can contribute to the world, their lifestyle, day to day life. The story is based on 22 years of old, Piyush Prajapati. A fresh graduate who got recruited typically in an Indian IT company. The show would definitely resemble your job-career if you do a full-time job. The comedy show displays the work-life balance of a jobholder in this continent. How wonderful the first salary can be, how touchy colleague relations are, and many more. I would recommend you two watch the first two or three episodes in one go. You would love it.

Delhi Crime
If you’re a soft-hearted person I would recommend you NOT TO watch the show.
The show is the adoption of the true story of the Nirbhaya rape case. The incident was so brutal that along with India the entire world was shocked about the crime. The Netflix show wonderfully presented the series showing how Delhi Police investigated the case, handled the media pressure and also pressure of the protesters. The details of the show are so realistically amazing that I personally was traumatized several days even though I’m a man. I wonder how vulnerable a woman can feel watching the show. The web series will keep you attracted throughout the whole seven episodes. All the main characters have played their role amazingly. Specially Shefali Shah’s performance was top notch.

Asur
Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side is one of the most hyped web series of 2020. The strong script and excellent acting of Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti made it a must-watch. Asur means “satan” in Hindi and the serial killer proclaims himself as “Asur” in the show. The lead character forensic science teacher Nikhil was leading a happy life in the US, who happens to be an ex-CBI officer. His life suddenly takes a mysterious turn while the criminal sends him coordinates of corpses from India. Thus he comes back to India and starts working under his mentor Arshad Warsi again. The thrill of this investigation and the mysterious mind of the serial killer will make you fasten your seatbelt.

A celebrity TV news anchor becomes a target of a dangerous group of killers. Nobody knows the reason why he was targeted and investigation keeps unraveling new mysterious paths. Inspector Hathiram and his partner Ansari’s dedication to going to the bottom of the case will keep you engaged with the entire show. The show shows the portrait of corrupted India and hatred through races while crime is a day to day factor. Let’s not describe more about the show so that you don’t get any spoilers. The ending amazed me, hope it amazes you as well.
The show has nine episodes and it is available on Amazon Prime.
Sacred Games
The expectations level was set very high since the show was produced by Netflix and directed by big fish like Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. The series was the first Indian series produced by Netflix and apparently a successful production. It is the most popular and hyped series for definite reasons. Stars like Saif Ali Khan, Nawzuddin Siddiqui, and Radhika Apte played mesmerizing roles in this series. The show is an unorthodox Indian web series which is full of violence & nudity. The script is totally unpredictable and full of twists. The audience eagerly waited for season 2 which was finally released in August 2020

The Cinematography and the acting of each role made it a must-watch. I wouldn’t take the risk of spoiling the actual fun The show starts when a notorious wanted gangster Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) suddenly surrenders himself to an ordinary police officer Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan). Why would such a powerful criminal whom the police could not even trace for years, surrender himself to a low ranked police officer? Sartaj Singh tries to go deeper into the reason behind this and unravels mysterious facts.
Mirzapur
Mirzapur is one of the most popular Indian series. Stars like Divyendu aka CarryMinati, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey played their role so amazingly that the audience was eagerly waiting for the arrival of season two. Season two was finally released in October 2020. The plot of the action drama series is based on the lives of gangsters of Mirzapur. You can call it a gang war drama. The show displays the reality of the lawlessness of India and how powerful gangsters can be to rule the city as well as the state. Divyendu Sharma aka CarryMinati who is a popular YouTuber played a significant and negative role of Munna bhai in the show. You will love and hate the character of Munna bhai as well as other characters throughout the show. I will not describe further since I may spoil the thrill. You can watch the show without thinking about it twice.

Panchayet
If you are a fan of Indian web series then you must be a fan of Jitendra Kumar, who is the protagonist of this show. The comedy-drama series shows the struggle of an Indian who took a job as the secretary of the village Panchayat Chief. The competitive job market of India forced him to take the job in rural India. TVF always amused us with extraordinary shows and Panchayet is no different.

Abhishek comes to a distant village from his home to fulfill his duty as a secretary of the Panchayet chief. The show is funny and realistic. An engineering graduate who been raised up in a metropolitan finds it too difficult to adapt in rural India. Gradually he and the audience start to love the village and the show as it goes on. You will love this series and regret why it ended so soon.
The 8 episode long series is available on Amazon Prime.
Family Man
Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role of this action drama. The show is based on a middle-class man who is an intelligence officer. The dedicated agent of the National Investigation Agency struggles to maintain his hectic job and family both at a time. The show wonderfully portrayed how Indian government officials especially intelligent officers struggle to lead their typical life with such low pay and immense pressure and responsibility of their job and daily lives. You would guess that it is a typical action-spy drama, but trust me it isn’t. The show also shows how Muslims in India are often ill-treated by the law-enforcement agencies only because they are minority/Muslims. The lead actor’s role and magnificent play by Manoj Bajpayee will hook you from the beginning.
