Hello everyone, today I wanted to show you this photo that I really liked and tell you a little about the phenomenon that is reflected in it.
Hablaremos sobre el "Prisma"/ We will talk about the "Prism"
and that is what I have called my photograph:
"Prism in nature - Science in a photograph"
Primero, aclaremos
¿Qué es un prisma?
First, let's clarify
What is a prism?
It is an object that refracts, reflects and decomposes light, it is generally triangular in shape, the cover of Pink Floid's famous album "The Dark Side Of The Moon" will come to mind, and that is exactly what it is. white light that breaks down into all the visible colors that are the famous colors of the rainbow. In my photography we do not have a prism as such, but a glass surface that is the window and the sunlight of a beautiful morning.
You will surely wonder
What is this phenomenon due to?
The answer is that white light has all the colors of the rainbow and according to Snell's law, when the light passes from the air to the glass it decreases its speed, causing as a consequence a deviation of the trajectory which causes the reflection and / or diffraction of the light then decomposes.
Issac Newton was the first to deny that light changed colors when passing through a glass surface, white light only changes its angle, it does not change colors as such, however he did not recognize the reason or why, since for at that time the wave naturalization of light had not been discovered.
However, thanks to advances in optical physics, we know that colors are waves, and each color has a different wavelength. When wavelengths approach cool colors like violet they tend to be shorter, unlike wavelengths that approach red which are longer. So, knowing this when white light enters the prism or in this case the surface of the glass in my house, each color takes a different path with different speeds, due to the change in angle. . That is why we observe in my photograph a separation of the colors, forming an elongated wall next to each other on top of the plant leaf.
I love science and photography and it is my pleasure to seek the answers to many questions that natural phenomena give us. If you got to this point I thank you very much.
