Art of Religion · Act VI

If you enjoyed Act V on our afternoon walk thru the gallery of the Philippine Colonial Tradition of Sacred Art located in the Philippine National Museum. I am inviting you again to join me on another walk as we see more Religious artworks from the 17th to 19th century.

Emygdius was known to be a pagan who turned to Christianity. Legend tells that he cured the paralytic, made the blind see and healed the sick in Rome. The governor Polymius tried to convince Emygdius to worship Jupiter and Angaria which he rejected. This angered the governor and decapitated Emygdius. Legend says that Emygdius stood up and carried his head to a mountain where a chapel was constructed.

Saint Barbara is known to be the patron saint of armorers, architects, miners, engineers, artillerymen, explosives, guns and is associated with lightning.

Saint Barbara was tortured because of her Christian faith. It was said that her wounds due to torture miraculously healed when morning came. They even tried fire to torture her but eventually, the flames go out. Finally, she was beheaded and was done by her father. After her death, her lightning from the heavens came down and struck her father dead.

Saint Saturnino a martyr that was ordered to be beheaded by the governor. This is because he refuses to worship Jupiter.

San Isidro Labrador is a farmer and is also known as the laborer. His story is filled with miracles.
Stories of angels helping him plow the fields.
Bringing the daughter of his master back to life.
Feeding pigeons during winter with his stored grain and the bag miraculously became full again.
These are just some of the miraculous stories of San Isidro Labrador.

San Albino De Angers is a French Abbot and is known to help people in distress. It has also been said that he helped free people who have been hostage by pirates.

San Cristobal is known to be the saint of travelers. In his art representations, he is always seen to be carrying a child on his back.
As the story goes a child asked him to carry him across the river. The river became deep as they crossed and the child became heavy. After they got across the child told him that he is Christ and simply vanished.

San Antonio Abad is also known as Anthony of the desert, a hermit. The painting depicts his time in the desert. Here he was tempted by the devil and had conflicts with them. There were times that he was severely injured with his struggle with the demons.
