You must not have lived through the Microsoft era.
The PC era launched with numerous companies creating different software solutions.
Bill Gates bought the DOS operating system. He leveraged that to gain monopolistic control of the IBM PC stack. There were several interesting paths to creating a GUI. Microsoft was able to leverage its control of the PC stack to position Windows as a monopoly.
Microsoft was never the best technology.
Gate's genius was simply figuring out which elements of the stack one needed to control to gain power. Microsoft itself tended to create second rate bloated programs.
