I hope you're all having a wonderful day and staying committed to a cleaner, healthier world. Today, I’d like to shed some light on an important topic — one that’s often ignored but has a serious impact on human health, especially in places with poor sanitation: Hepatitis A.
Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Unlike other types of hepatitis, this one spreads primarily through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, often due to poor environmental hygiene.
So, how does this tie into the environment?
When our surroundings are dirty, especially with open defecation or poor waste disposal, water sources can easily get contaminated with human feces. In areas where people drink untreated water, the risk of contracting hepatitis A increases significantly. It’s even worse when children are affected, as it can cause severe illness and sometimes require hospitalization.
Here are some key ways we can prevent the spread of Hepatitis A through environmental action:
Ensure proper waste disposal – Avoid dumping refuse or sewage near water sources.
Promote clean water access – Boil drinking water if you’re unsure of its source, or use water purifiers.
Discourage open defecation – Encourage the use of toilets and proper sewage systems.
Support public sanitation projects – Be involved in or support campaigns that improve water and waste systems.
Personal hygiene education – Encourage hand washing after toilet use and before handling food.
It’s heartbreaking to think that something as preventable as Hepatitis A still affects many because of dirty environments. But the good news is — we can change this. By keeping our environment clean, we protect not just the earth, but our health too.
