Hello Hivers,🪴🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾
I would love to share with you this amazing journey of my maize farm cultivation so far. True maize or corn is one of the widely cultivated food in Nigeria and one of the major boosters to the economy of Nigeria and Africa at large.
Here are the outlined steps I have taken so far in this farming process:
The cultivation of maize (corn) involves several key stages, from land preparation to harvesting. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Land Preparation
Select well-drained, fertile soil .
Plow the land to loosen the soil, improve aeration, and remove weeds.

Harrow to break clumps and level the field for uniform planting.
Apply organic manure or basal fertilizers (e.g., NPK 15:15:15) before planting.
- Seed Selection and Sowing
Choose high-yielding, disease-resistant maize varieties suitable for your climate.

Plant seeds at the beginning of the rainy season or use irrigation if necessary.
Space seeds 75 cm apart between rows and 25 cm apart within rows at a depth of 3–5 cm.
Sow 1–2 seeds per hole for optimal plant density.

- Germination and Early Growth (7–14 Days)
Seeds sprout and emerge from the soil within a week under suitable moisture conditions.
Ensure weed-free conditions to reduce competition for nutrients.
Apply pre-emergence herbicides if needed.
