My Journey into Agriculture: From POS to Rabbit Farming.

My cute bunny

A few years ago, I ventured into the world of entrepreneurship with a Point of Sale (POS) business. Initially, it thrived, I built a loyal customer base and enjoyed modest success. However, as time passed, the business began to falter. The profits dwindled, barely covering my bills, and I found myself pouring in more effort than I was getting back. Frustrated yet determined, I knew I needed a change. After much reflection, an idea sparked: why not try agriculture? It was a bold shift, but one I felt compelled to explore. With cautious optimism, I decided to start small and dive into the world of farming.

My Chicks

My first foray into agriculture was poultry farming. I hoped it would be a profitable venture, but the challenges outweighed the rewards. The costs were high, and the returns were disappointing. Undeterred, I explored other options, eventually settling on two enterprises: growing beans on a small plot of land and raising rabbits. These choices felt manageable and promising, aligning with my resources and goals. While the bean farming provided a steady, albeit modest, income, it was rabbit farming that truly captured my heart and transformed my perspective on agriculture.

Tending to my growing Beans

Rabbit farming, I discovered, is both accessible and rewarding. Rabbits are among the easiest animals to raise, yet they are incredibly productive and lucrative. My experience inspired me to start working on an article titled; "Agricultural Entrepreneurship: The Rabbit Enterprise", where I plan to share my journey and insights with all my HIVE family. Starting with just three rabbits, two does (females) and one buck (male), I witnessed remarkable growth. Within a year, I sold 66 rabbits and slaughtered over 50 for household consumption. This rapid production rate amazed me and highlighted the potential of rabbit farming as a sustainable business.

The benefits of my agricultural journey extend beyond financial gains. Farming beans has allowed me to feed my family while selling surplus crops to cover expenses. Meanwhile, rabbit farming has eliminated the need to buy meat, as my rabbits provide a steady supply. These small-scale efforts have brought stability and pride, proving that agriculture can be a viable path even for beginners. Starting small has been key, allowing me to learn, adapt, and grow without overwhelming risks.

Cutting grass for my Rabbits

Despite the successes, rabbit farming comes with challenges. Sourcing feed, for instance, can be tedious. I often trek to the bush to gather grass for my rabbits, a task that demands daily commitment. Yet, the joy of seeing my rabbits thrive and knowing they contribute to my income makes it worthwhile. Each day, as I tend to my animals, I’m reminded of the potential this venture holds, not just for me, but for anyone willing to embrace agriculture.

What I love most about rabbit farming is its scalability. From a humble beginning with three rabbits, I’ve built a small but thriving operation. My passion for this work has grown stronger than ever, fueling dreams of expansion. I envision owning a larger plot of land where I can establish a robust rabbit farm. My goal is to supply rabbits to breeders, both small and large-scale, and even open a slaughterhouse dedicated to rabbit meat. This would not only meet local demand but also create jobs and promote sustainable farming in my community.

To those wondering what path to take in life, I wholeheartedly recommend agriculture. It’s a field that offers endless possibilities, requiring neither vast resources nor grand beginnings. You can start small, as I did, and grow at your own pace. While I haven’t “arrived” yet, I’m on a journey to expand my farm and realize my vision. My next step is securing enough capital to purchase land and build a larger rabbitry. Agriculture has given me purpose, stability, and hope, proving that with patience and effort, it can provide everything you need to thrive.
