“Nepal’s Gen-Z Protests: Political Turmoil and Social Unrest”

in World News28 days ago

Nepal is currently going through a deep political and social crisis. The recently started "Gen-Z movement" has spread rapidly across the country. It started with the ban imposed by the government on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The youth considered it an attack on their freedom and took to the streets. Soon this movement was not limited to social media but became a symbol of anger against corruption, unemployment, family political dominance and lack of opportunities.

The protests gradually turned violent. There were incidents of arson, vandalism and clashes with the police in many cities including the capital Kathmandu. The Parliament House, the Supreme Court and some media offices were also damaged. So far several protesters have died and hundreds have been injured. Seeing the situation worsening, the government deployed the army on the streets and imposed an indefinite curfew in the capital.

Amidst this political turmoil, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned. His resignation shows how serious the pressure of the movement was. Tribhuvan International Airport also had to be closed and many international flights had to be diverted to India and other countries. Tourism and trade have also been badly affected.

India has taken several steps to help its citizens stranded in Nepal. Governments of various states have set up helplines and control rooms to evacuate people in distress. Security has also been tightened at the border.

Overall, Nepal is currently going through a period of instability. The younger generation is demanding change, while the government and administration are trying to maintain law and order. It is not clear yet what turn the situation will take in the coming days.
