This week's word of the week is, 'Bizarre', and so I thought that I would pay tribute to 'Bizarre Love Triangle' one of my favorite songs.
It is also a song that has played a surprisingly big part in shaping the direction of my life which I will get into later on.
80s Vibes Intensify
Bizarre Love Triangle was released in 1986 and for a song that has lasted 35 years, it never had much success on the charts. It didn't make the top 100 in the US charts and only went as high as 56 in the UK.
In fact, a campfire cover version by Frente! was the highest it went on the charts at 49.
The Lyrics
New Order doesn't get much credit for their lyrics and maybe fairly so but in Bizarre Love Triangle, I think there are some beautiful and emotive lines. Particularly the opening line and the chorus:
"Every time I think of you I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue."
"Every time I see you falling I get down on my knees and pray."
And as with pretty much every New Order song, the title doesn't appear anywhere in the song. There's no mention of anything bizarre or a love triangle of any sort.
In My Own Life
A love of 80s music is one of the common interests that has kept my group of friends bonded together for more than 15 years. This is despite none of us knowing what each others' music interests were when we became friends.
Cheesy 80s lyrics and corny band names were the conversations starters when I first met my wife. She still can't believe there's a band out there named, 'The Pet Shop Boys'.
The big and deciding moments in one's life can sometimes appear seemingly random and full of bizarre serendipity. That is the beauty of life, we can't control outcomes and are only entitled to our efforts.
