Goal Setting — the Value of Setting SMALL Goals in Daily Life!

Since a lot of people in this community are also investors and gamers, we talk a lot about setting goals around here.

Which is definitely a good thing, if you're trying to accomplish something!

I set my share of goals for what I hope to accomplish on Hive, for example... and I find that quite useful, in terms of letting me know whether or not I'm on the right track. That's what goal setting and benchmarking is supposed to be about, right?

The Value if SMALL Goals!

I suppose we could debate whether or not "reaching 5,000 Hive Power by the end of 2025" is an inspiring goal... I suppose it's worthy to aspire to, but it's not very meaningful on a daily basis, is it? Let's face it... the daily "dent" we can make on a 30 month journey is... well... negligible.

I read an article in a psychology magazine — which, of course, I can't find now! — pointing out the value of making a daily to-do list with lots of relatively small and readily doable goals. It might seem like a silly waste of time and paper, but it has a purpose:

Every time we can scratch something off our to-do list we actually get a small "shot" of dopamine... that feel good neurotransmitter that's triggered and released by positive experiences.

It might seem like it would have a trivial impact on our lives, but it's surprisingly effective.

After all, most (longer term) goals are reached by feeling inspired to repeat a daily process over and over and over, until the larger goal is reached. So it only makes sense that establishing a pattern of small "feel good" accomplishments will contribute positively to ingraining the habits we need to establish in order to reach our long-term goals.

And yes, I personally have a five year plan. But I don't look at it very often... because it's so far away. Instead I focus — day by day — on trying to accomplish 1/1000th of that goal as a "conmplete task," with the knowledge that if I do, I have a good chance of reaching my long term goal, ahead of time!

I suppose you could say this is all "meantal trickery," but I'd submit that it's important that we employ whatever methods we can come up with, to guide our lives to where we want them. Even if that means the "gamification" of OUR OWN lives!

=^..^=

Accomplishing your goals whether large or small is very satisfying. I never make a written list but carry a mental to-do list in my head otherwise my husband would be looking at it and taking on some of the tasks. lol

Setting small goals in daily life is a valuable practice that can help us stay motivated and on track towards our long-term goals. Breaking down bigger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks that we can accomplish on a daily basis can give us a sense of accomplishment and boost our confidence. Completing small tasks on a daily basis releases dopamine, which is a natural feel-good chemical that can help us stay positive and focused on our goals. Overall, setting small goals is an effective way to build positive habits and achieve our long-term goals.

The other benefit of making a daily todo list is that you know when you have done all your work and can stop working.
