In this post, we take a look at Split First and Last Names in Google Sheets.
Google sheets is one of the useful spreadsheet editor on the web which many of us make use of for variety of data manipulation options. So let's think of a scenario where you have a cell which contains both first name and last name.
And by using the spreadsheet skills you have to split the name into first and last name. And make sure to split them in such a way that you would have them separately in each cell. Now that is specific to the google sheets capacity to split that string. So in this post we look at how to do that part.
First thing that we should do is have some data. Make sure that your single cell contains the "name surname" in one cell itself. That would help you with using variety of methods to split the cell up into the multiple ways. So one of the way I am going to try up here in the paragraph below and you can explore further into the youtube video linked.
Say you have a name in cell A2 and then you want to remove the name from that and put up with another column. Then we move to the surname in one another column for that we make use of the surname put into another.
We use the LEFT function and RIGHT function to handle this and we would be making changes like the below code.
=LEFT(cell reference,FIND(“ “,cell reference)-1
and say if you want to get the surname out in right side to another column you can try the below code.
=RIGHT(cell reference,LEN(cell reference)-FIND(“ “, cell reference))
There is also one function that we can make use of here, which is known as the SPLIT. And that function would allow you to work with splitting of specific cell. So how does the standard command works in this case.
=SPLIT(A2,” “).
Now you can make sure to split it like this in one of the nearby column. Which can be quick way to do this. You can also use the addons and also there are other GUI based ways to do this. But what works for youis something you should stick with when it comes to handling the full name.
I have covered this tutorial through another channel video of mine. So hopefully people also find my spreadsheet related content useful. When it comes to the spreadsheet with the split names and also you want to filter some other content you can find this useful. Most of the folks who do data manipulation find this useful with their skills.
I hope this tutorial helps you achieve the goal that you are seeking. The video here also helps out with the spreadsheet skills and also you can use it for the editing and the spreadsheets data filtering options. Do keep tab on these tutorials. I will be posting them every week.
Interesting. Does it work in Calc, too?
LEFT and RIGHT is there in calc just double check for the SPLIT function if it exists there.
