Power BI - How to Import json Data into Power BI

in Proof of Brain2 years ago

In this post, we take a look at How to Import json Data into Power BI. Earlier I have covered things like importing the CSV data into the Power BI. And now I am covering the JSON data. I have also covered the MS SQL Server and the connect MS Access to Power BI connection options.

If you have not downloaded the Power BI desktop, make sure to do so. And also if possible sign up to the cloud version of the Power BI. And that would get you access to the service and also the connection. I would say that it would be easier for you to work

So let's learn how to do just that.

Connect to Data Source - JSON Data

Now the thing is if you wish to add the json data to your power bi, make sure that you have some sample file in the json format. Like say some sample data in the json format you can find out here. I have tried out some of the sample data in the JSON format like that over there.

You may want to get access to the data in that format. And it would be easier for you to work with the content too. I know a lot of people that you can use for the importing of the json data. I don't know how many of you would be making use of the power bi for such data but there is a driver and official support so not much prep needed.

Make the Connection.

You can follow the below steps for connecting to the JSON data from the power bi.

  1. Open power BI desktop.
  2. Make sure to click on the "Get Data".
  3. Make sure to find out the "JSON" file from the list.
  4. Make sure to open the path to that file.
  5. Add the data into the browser and then check if your data is as you expect.
  6. Edit data through DAX editor.
  7. Save the data and go back to Power BI.

That's it. You are now ready to use this data for your work. And you can do the visualization as you please. That would help you make use of the content properly into the Power BI desktop. I have seen that would be working out pretty smoothly for you.

Now that you have made the changes as required, your data from the JSON file is over there. And you can easily work around with the data there. I know some of the people who make use of the Power BI desktop and have imported their data using the JSON and have found the above method useful and working for them.

Keep an eye on more of my tutorials. I am covering a lot of Power BI tutorials. And some of the other ones would be easier to work with. But overall I would say that importing data into the power bi can be easier but not that easier if you don't have drivers. So I am covering that part through tutorial, Do follow me on youtube for the same.
