A Gentle Walk Around Hardwick Ponds

in Proof of Brain2 years ago (edited)

It turned out to be quite a nice day. The sun was out, so we had a walk around the ponds at Hardwick Hall, which belongs to the National Trust.

We crossed the wooden footbridge and followed the path to the ponds.

Near the ponds, there were a few Canada geese. They tend to feed on land so you see them mostly out of the water. They're not as aggressive as swans unless they are protecting their young.

We came across an old ice house. As it states, years ago, the ice was taken from the frozen ponds and then stored in the ice house during winter to preserve food for the posh people residing in the big hall. Thank goodness for refrigerators!

The marsh marigold is a lovely, yellow large buttercup. We sometimes refer to them as 'kingcups', for obvious reasons.

On the walk, we came across some really good wooden animal sculptures. There's a few more scattered around the gardens.

There were lots of walks to explore, some easy, some not so easy but something for everyone, whatever your age.
