Engagement via comments is crucial for a community I think. With comments you can show appreciation to the author, start a discussion or help newcomers.
The 'gain' for the commenters is engagement with other community members. By engaging via comments you'll probably get more followers and thereby possibly more votes for your own blogs.
Nice question mate, nice seeing the power of your engagement on comments in the platform.
