
Forests cover 31 percent of the world’s land surface or about 4 billion hectares. Today, we’ll look at the 10th largest country in terms of forest area: India.
The forest cover in India is around 720.000 square kilometers which is 24% of the country’s area and around 2% of the world’s total forest area as illustrated below.

India is one of the most diverse regions in the world.
It has broadly five categories of forests:
a) tropical evergreen forests

b) tropical deciduous forests

c)tropical thorn forests

d) montane forests

e)swamp forests

Each of these forests has a different ecosystem that sustains a variety of small and large animals along with a large number of endemic medicinal plants.
