Procrastination... The uninspiring alternative to "Effort".

It's always advisable for each person to have a very clear set of goals that he/she is trying to achieve. When you have yours mapped out and well-detailed, it becomes easier to review it and see how far you've moved toward achieving the goal.

Very often, the outcome of your review or self-assessment will show what you are doing right, and what needs to be improved on. It will also show things that are not yielding the intended result, among other things. It basically helps you to better understand how to tweak your plan.

Since that is the case and it's proven that setting goals and working with a plan is an effective approach to take, you would still be surprised that a lot of people set out on a project without having a well-detailed plan or setting a specific goal. Think about it for a moment;

  • Why would you start a workout routine without a specific plan or target?

  • Why take on a project without a plan or target?

  • Well, people even start their day, week, and month without any plan or Target.

One of the reasons people hold back from setting specific goals and drawing detailed plans for themselves is because they know that having something like that presents a condition for their success or failure to be measured. If their goal is simply to take 30-minutes walk each day, it's very easy to look back at their activity for the day and say "Yeah, I did it" or "Meh... I failed at this".

That's the truth.

Just because they don't want to deal with the chance of being exposed to what they failed to achieve, they choose instead to just live through each day without setting specific goals for themselves. Meanwhile, those who choose to set specific goals and stick with them can have moments when they will fail to achieve their goals. But, they will take the L and bounce back with more motivation for a chance of getting a win the next day.

From this alone, it's obvious that we've all got to put some effort into getting what we want from life. It takes effort to draw plans and set goals. It takes a greater effort to follow through with each of the plans we have. Of course, anyone who has tried doing this will know that even with all your plans and well-specified goals, you can still experience uninspiring things that will yield uninspiring results. But, it's all worth it.

Making an effort even in the face of uncertainty is a much better approach to take than the alternative which is procrastination.

I've felt the excitement of success in micro goals that I set for myself. I've also learned to be very intentional about cutting off procrastination from my life. That terrifying feeling of knowing that I didn't even get a chance to try something because I was continuously putting it off isn't worth it. At some point, I ended up starting later than supposed and I remember yelling "why did I wait for so long" at myself.

Just to be sure there won't be any regret that stems from procrastination, I often choose to be specific about the things I want to achieve and follow that up with genuine effort.

Procastination is the murder of a lot of things that we really need to kill before it actually goes out of hand ✋

Exactly. Being procrastinative when we have something to work on can lead to regret. Taking action is better even when we are uncertain of what the result of our action will be.
