As asked by @lavender22 – “Could there be extreme consequences for restricting the world’s innovative growth?”
I believe that there would be terrible consequences of intentionally restricting the world’s innovation. Innovation is an integral part of what it means to be human. As a species, we are best at innovating. Whether it is great feats like taming the growth of plants and animals, or simply finding a shortcut on a task out of laziness, innovation is an integral part of the way we function. If this aspect of our human nature were to try to be externally suppressed, the exact result would be unpredictable, but it would definitely have a negative impact. To explore this idea further, what is meant by “restricting innovation” must be defined. If it is defined as a government or other organization refuses to allow the adoption of new technologies, several things would occur. First, people would be moderately okay with it, and for a while, not much would change. However, as time went on, organizations would quickly begin to try to secretly innovate, or begin a black market of innovative ideas. This would lead to a weird struggle of the government or organization attempting to enforce the creation of sub optimal goods or services. This public opinion will be increased as the quality of goods being produced actually does start to dwindle, as there is no longer a drive to be better, since being “better” is now outlawed. Without innovation, there would be nothing new, ever. The population would quickly become restless and/or depressed, as the experiences around them degraded and became more monotonous. As a result, the overall quality of life would degrade, as opposed to remaining as it was when the policy was initiated. This would be compounded by the increase of population causing an increased strain on a system that is no longer allowed to improve. Although this sounds bleak, and likely would be so, there would also likely be a very few organizations that would practice the methods that are available to them, and become as efficient as possible, despite the lack of economic motivation, and the fact that if they are not very careful, they may be shut down. All in all, suppressing the natural drive of the human race to innovate would be a very grave mistake that would cripple far more than can be comprehended.
