Musee de la Chasse de la Nature in Paris

in Proof of Brain2 months ago (edited)

Even though my family is not involved in hunting and have no interest in guns,
they found much of interest in this eclectic Paris museum/art gallery.

The museum of Hunting and Nature had resaonablely priced admission, was within walking distance of their B&B in Paris, and they had read good reviews from people who had visited and enjoyed it.

From Fodors Travel Guide

Mark this down as one of Paris's most distinctive—and fascinating—collections around the theme of "humans and nature." The museum, housed in the gorgeous 17th-century Hôtel de Guénégaud, features lavishly appointed rooms stocked with animal- and hunt-themed art and sculpture by the likes of Rubens and Gentileschi, as well as antique weaponry and taxidermy interspersed with contemporary works by artists such as Jeff Koons, Sophie Calle, and Walton Ford. In a tribute to Art Nouveau, the decor incorporates chandeliers and railings curled like antlers. Older kids will appreciate the jaw-dropping Trophy Room's impressive menagerie of beasts, not to mention the huge polar bear stationed outside. There is a lovely multimedia exhibit on the myth of the unicorn, as well as charming interactive displays on antique weaponry and bird calls. Temporary exhibits take place on the first floor, with works scattered throughout the permanent collection. There's also a spacious café.

Many of the rather bizarre creatures are crafted out of fabric.

The rooms of the old hotel are elegant and used to advantage for the always interesting displays.

There is quirky mix of old and new, taxidermy animals, and contemporary and classic art related to nature.

very good image displays. I like seeing the deer head display

I'm not a fan of hanging animal heads on walls as trophies, but it is interesting to see.

The mix of old and new art looks so awesome Mel. I’d love to see the unicorn exhibit. 💯💯💯💯 These are very nice

It seems a fascinating museum. My kids did enjoy it.

So glad they did Mel ❤️ !PIZZA

Well, this is quite a strange yet beautiful museum. That big hanging bird is a little scary😄 but the colour, paintings and everything else looks so stunning.

That bird is part of a special exhibit showing art crafted out of fabric. I thought the hanging meat was most bizarre!

I found that bird hanging upside down more scary because recently, in the living area of a house with my wife, I saw a sculpture of a human hanging upside down instead of a chandelier from the ceiling that too at a very low height like this bird and we thought that if someone suddenly sees this sculpture in the dark of night, he will surely scream.😂 That meat was undoubtedly the most bizarre.

Greetings @melinda010100 ,

What a wild and wonderful post...a visit to a museum which I am of the opinion that only the French could pull off and in such a splendid way...just fascinating.

Thank you so much for this most interesting day-out.

Cheers, Bleujay

It is very French isn't it? I'm glad you enjoyed it.

That is such a cool museum! Those old rifles must be worth a fortune, and there is just so much in the collection there. It has that very Paris decorations motif which is always fun to see. Is this one you visited or your granddaughter?

I don't think this museum existed the last time I visited Paris. These photo are from my kids visit. I do remember going to the museum of medieval history and seeing The Lady and Unicorn tapestries. There is so much to see and do in Paris

Interesting museum. People forget that hunters contribute tons of dollars to habitat preservation and much of the early naturalist work was done of animals purchased at markets from hunters. Also not a hunter though but it is a significant part of rural American culture that is misunderstood or not even an effort made to understand it by "cityfolk" haha
