Hippocrates' Home

in Proof of Brain4 years ago

Continuing on my travel through Kos Island I stumbled upon a reconstruction of an ancient Greek village

It was advertised as a reconstruction of Hippocrates' home (although this was meant very loosely. Nevertheless, it was very interesting and I could see that they put a lot of work and heart into this place. There are several different sites and buildings they reconstructed like a medicinal garden, a sort of "temple", some homes or halls and a theater.

The garden was well made with a statue centered in the middle. Around it were many medicinal plants to which they added signs which included their names as well as their medicinal uses. I noticed that most of them were directed towards treating women's ailments. There was also a sort of hall in which they showcased ancient medical devices which looked pretty terrifying. Some of them were apparently used for brain operations!

The room included books about healing and mythology as well as some replicas of archeological finds. I really liked the floor decoration which was done with small stones of different colors and orientation that revealed this stunning picture:

Next up was a reconstruction of a common to higher class home. It has a small garden in the front with some statues. Unfortunately it was quite dark inside so I couldn't take any pictures. But there was a room for storing wine, some sleeping rooms as well as a bathroom and a kitchen. What amazed me was a bathtub which our host said was not a modern invention. It was also interesting to learn that women generally slept in the second floor and men in the first to protect them of thieves etc.

Then were was the theater which was not just a reconstruction but was also used for seminars, plays and workshops. You can see how this could look in the second picture. I suppose this was a reenactment of some ancient ritual. It definitely looks very authentic!

Finally, there was this unfinished temple located on top of a small hill. I suppose the host used it actively as well for various practices/performances/rituals. Not so much to see, but the view was great as this place was close to the ocean.

If you plan on visiting here one day, you definitely need a car as it is quite far away from the local towns and there is only a long dirt road to get there. But the hostess was very friendly and welcoming and it was worth seeing how life might have been thousands of years ago!

Hmmm, brain operations hey! This is amazing given the ancient times, I am wondering about the skill and knowledge of the 'doctors' and why they operated. Maybe to learn more about the brain.
This is like a house one would find today @tobetada.

yes, perhaps one of the reasons for that is that it is relatively new, I think about 5 years or so. But they said that they tried to build it in an authentic way. Not sure how accurate it is though.

I can't imagine being operated on back then as well :/

Wow, that looks like a gorgeous spot. So glad that you shared it cause now I know where it is so I can go there too one day.

I loved Greece. Actually I'd love to go back again- for much longer and too see more of the authentic Greece, the ancient Greece and the off the beaten path Greece.

exactly, that's where the interesting stuff lies ;)

Yeah so true!

It was interesting
Especially the medical devices that really scared me😲

Very nice. I would like to go to Greece and see the historical sites, but a reconstruction like this is very nice to visit also, and maybe more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
