The "society of the spectacle" was coined by French philosopher, writer, and filmmaker Guy Debord in the 1967s. The eponymous work describes a society where media representations and the commodification of human relationships have replaced real life. Debord argued that alienation and superficiality have become pervasive in our daily lives and that the media and advertising have nurtured a reality based on appearance and consumption.
A spectacle is not just a set of images but a social relationship between people mediated by images. Moreover, spectacle maintains the existing order and perpetuates power structures.
The proliferation of social networks and mass media has intensified the spectacular nature of everyday life and created an environment in which people are constantly exposed to images and media representations. In addition, the content that is shared is designed to be consumed quickly, which can contribute to the fragmentation of experience and attention.
On the other hand, there is a kind of surveillance capitalism today, where companies like Google and Facebook collect and exploit vast amounts of personal data, which extends the commodification and alienation that Debord described.
We already know that these data leaks are used to create detailed user profiles and sell targeted advertising, which turns our lives and experiences into products that can be bought and sold in the marketplace.
Hence, many of the problems raised by Debord have intensified. So now, here comes my reflection, could the web3, or decentralized internet, offer a solution to these problems?
An antidote to centralized power?
One of the critical features of web3 is decentralization, which eliminates intermediaries and redistributes power online. Doing it could weaken the dominance of large corporations and reduce the commoditization of our online lives.
Reclaiming our privacy
Web3 allows users to own and control our data, which could empower individuals and decrease the alienation caused by surveillance capitalism. By holding our data, we can protect our privacy and prevent the exploitation of our digital lives.
Encouraging collaboration and real value
Web3 could also give rise to an alternative care economy based on collaboration, participation, and reward for real value contributed to online communities. We can create a healthier, less spectacular online environment by shifting the focus away from superficial competition.
New forms of interaction and organization
DAOs enable more equitable and democratic participation in decision-making. By actively empowering people to participate in the governance of their online communities, DAOs could lead to a less alienated and spectacular society.
Fighting manipulation and misinformation
While web3 has the potential to address some of the problems associated with the "society of the spectacle" and Debord's approaches, we must remember that it is not a magic bullet.
It will take a conscious, collective effort to change how we relate to technology and each other. Web3 can be a powerful tool to help us achieve a more just, equitable, and less spectacular society, but it will depend on how we choose to use it and what values we want to cultivate.
We must ask ourselves: Are we willing to embrace decentralization and collaboration to build a more authentic and less superficial online future?

De la sociedad del espectáculo a la era de la web3
La "sociedad del espectáculo", es un concepto acuñado por el filósofo, escritor y cineasta francés Guy Debord en la década de 1967. La obra homónima describe una sociedad en la que la vida real ha sido reemplazada por representaciones mediáticas y la mercantilización de las relaciones humanas. Debord argumentaba que la alienación y la superficialidad se han vuelto omnipresentes en nuestra vida cotidiana, y que los medios de comunicación y la publicidad han alimentado una realidad basada en la apariencia y el consumo.
La proliferación de las redes sociales y los medios de comunicación ha intensificado la naturaleza espectacular de la vida cotidiana y ha creado un entorno en el que las personas estamos constantemente expuestas a imágenes y representaciones mediáticas. Además, el contenido que se comparte está diseñado para ser consumido rápidamente, lo que puede contribuir a la fragmentación de la experiencia y la atención.
Por otro lado, existe una especie de capitalismo de vigilancia actual, en el que empresas como Google y Facebook recopilan y explotan grandes cantidades de datos personales, esto resulta en una extensión de la mercantilización y alienación que Debord describió.
Ya sabemos que esas fugas de información son utilizadas para crear perfiles detallados de los usuarios y vender publicidad dirigida, lo que convierte nuestras vidas y experiencias en productos que se pueden comprar y vender en el mercado.
De ahí que muchos de los problemas planteados por Debord se hayan intensificado. Ahora, y aquí viene mi reflexión ¿podría la web3, o internet descentralizada, ofrecer una solución a estos problemas?

Si bien la web3 tiene el potencial de abordar algunos de los problemas asociados con la "sociedad del espectáculo" y los planteamientos de Debord, debemos recordar que no es una solución mágica. Será necesario un esfuerzo colectivo y consciente para cambiar la forma en que nos relacionamos con la tecnología y entre nosotros.
La web3 puede ser una herramienta poderosa para ayudarnos a lograr una sociedad más justa, equitativa y menos espectacular, pero dependerá de cómo elijamos utilizarla y qué valores queremos cultivar en el proceso.
En última instancia, la pregunta que debemos hacernos es: ¿Estamos dispuestos a abrazar la descentralización y la colaboración para construir un futuro en línea más auténtico y menos superficial?
