My guess is to provide the right environment with high humidity. The owner probably picked some branches and took it home to see them grow or keep longer for the music experiments.
But... it kinds of sounds ridiculous.. So the correct answer is: "they are in jail!"
Yep, we will ditch the rational answer and stick with the jail thing :D
