Hollywood Boulevard

I took a walk down Hollywood Boulevard for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

Look at all these big name celebrities with their name on a star. Just kidding these are earth stars from the family Geastraceae.

This is the most I've ever seen growing together. They seem to be everywhere this year. Maybe the cooler summer and consistent rains are beneficial to their mycelium.

I took a while to look for a pristine one. Most are in various stages of decay or are sporring. I think rotted one in the upper left looks kind of like Ron Perlman and I can't tell which ones are Dolly Parton...

This one seems to have inverted and has grabbed a bunch of soil along with it. Perhaps this one is Mickey Rouke after his latest surgery...

Here was one of the better looking ones. It still has the ball intact and there is no hole yet so it probably still is solid white inside. Perhaps this star only did some slight botox injections rather than a full blown face lift.

The color on this one was also very tan sort of like skin, maybe this star got some tips from the Kardashians. Sometimes when these dry out the star portion will fold into itself and the ball forms legs. So far I haven't been able to find one like this but it looks hilarious like a little person walking around with a round head.

Nearby I found a strange creature that stank badly.

This is a stinkhorn with the Latin name Phallus ravenelii.

These smell really putrid and they use this as a way to distribute spores. As you can see there is a little fly on the cap that is attracted by the nasty smell. Later on the fly will land elsewhere and distribute the spores to random places.

That's my trip to hollywood boulevard in the forest happy #fungifriday

Sort:

what you show on this occasion, very clear and quite impressive,,but I'm very curious about the last type of mushroom, it is very similar to the bridal veil mushroom, but yes, you can see that the mushroom doesn't seem to have bloomed yet, that's if I not wrong .... I'm really curious about the type of mushroom,, the color is also very interesting ...

This one is in the same family as the stinkhorns with the netting but this one doesn't make the netting like the bridal veil mushroom. I have yet to find one of those even though they are supposed to grow around here.

The mushroom that you managed to get and you photographed is really very unique I rarely see it

These two species are quite common around here, they seem to like bark paths.

I only found this mushroom once, I've searched the location I can't find it anymore

That's the strange things about mushrooms, they sometimes don't hatch for years again.

Yes, their beauty makes us even more curious to look for them again in the wilderness

you found some unique mushrooms and amazing shots, I was blown away by your last mushroom, is it a replacement hood mushroom?

The last one is a stinkhorn, there are quite a few different species of stinkhorns some with veils on them others in red. Around here this is the most common form of the stinkhorn.

Hello dear friend @sketch.and.jam good morning
What a beautiful variety of mushrooms you have obtained this time, I really like their shape.
The second variety is very intriguing
I appreciate that you introduce us to these beautiful mushrooms
enjoy the weekend

Hopefully this weekend I can find even more new specimens. Maybe some chicken of the woods for a good meal.

Never seen both of them.
The stars are truly clustered together… so many of them.
Luckily we can’t smell it 😉🤓 hahaha it does look great though.
Happy weekend… soon 👋🏻😊☀️

Yeah the stinkhorns are pretty nasty, some people can get bad allergies from them. I've never seen so many stars growing in one place, maybe its a harbinger of a meteor storm coming soon lol.

Really… that’s bad when people react to it.
Maybe they are… very interesting thought @sketch.and.jam 🤔

Mickey Rouke after his latest surgery...

😂😂

All the little starts are adorable :)

Poor old mickey rourke should have just left his face alone.

Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star
And everybody's in movies, it doesn't matter who you are
There are stars in every city
In every house and on every street
And if you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Their names are written in concrete

  • Celluloid Heroes, the Kinks

This old song popped into my head immediately when I read the title of your post. Sorry for that digression...

I love those earth stars. They look like a pottery flower waiting to be painted. And the stinkhorn is interesting, I would like to find one of those to experience the smell or should I say stench 👃

The stinkhorns are pretty bad smelling. There was some guy on youtube that ate them in their egg form before they had a chance to hatch and he said they tasted like radishes.

Recently, in a documentary, I saw the Phallus ravenelii. I wonder how unpleasant it smells.

The first one you show I really liked. Thanks for sharing.

They smell pretty bad like some sort of rotten algae at a swamp. The earth stars are one of the coolest looking fungi I have around here.
