Farming Tales - The past, the present and the future

Introduction

I became a blockchain gamer in Dec 2021. I looked on Dappradar to see where the crowd was. I found my way to Splinterlands but I found the game has too big a learning curve for me. I have never played MTG before and having to memorise all the cards was too much for my ageing brain. Then I found Alien Worlds but couldn’t understand the “game”. How can clicking once every few mins. be considered a game? I discovered that there were hundreds more games on Wax than any other blockchain. I tried out a couple more games on Wax and finally in Oct 2022, I found my way to Farming Tales.

Farming Tales

I bought a Fishing Pier and a Lumberjack thinking I could specialise in these two Legendary products. My prime concern was not having something that needed my attention every hour. Six hours between clicks was acceptable. Wax began to lose most of its value soon after I joined. Prices of FT assets have plummeted to an all time low. It was also around this time that I realised I shouldn’t ignore the Farm part of the game. Keeping animals and planting crops are a fundamental part of the game. I took the opportunity to start up my farm taking advantage of the price drop.

Adapting to changes

A lot of the earliest players are not happy after the New Waxchester update. It is understandable when a vegetable garden was sold for 30k Wax (US$9.9k). However, in order to keep the game going, this change is necessary. If you look at all the successful Wax games that are still going strong now, they all have gone through this process. Using the old start up economic model is not going to sustain the game for years to come.

Linking NFTs to real world products

The overriding deciding factor for me joining this game is the link of in-game nfts to real world farm products. It was a novel idea that I hadn't heard of before. Honey and saffron were the first two trial products. We have since learned that shipping cost is a big concern for both senders or receivers. Lighter items like saffron are more manageable for both parties. If the problem of high shipping cost can be overcome, there would be more product opportunities. There are a few lighter weight products that I can think of to add to FT’s unique selling point.

Truffles

Soon after I joined Discord, I suggested adding truffles to the real life products list as pigs or dogs are already in the game, more use cases for in-game nfts are never a bad idea.

Porcini

Another product that I can think of is porcini. It’s light and easy to mail. The implementation of it could be different from other legendary products as well. Currently, you harvest at set intervals, be it once a day or every few hours. As porcini is a random find in real life, well, random until you find your first patch probably, you could make it so that the harvest amount is random. This probably won't go down too well with the players but it's just a suggestion.

Local Delicatessan

Another suggestion is perhaps you could try to get local Italian Delis all over the world to be a part of this FT real life partnership. As they will be getting supplies from Italy on a regular basis anyway, could you have an arrangement for them to be your courier into different countries?

Closing

The game has a great team behind it. New Waxchester is slowly getting updated to be a fully functional market place. It's a shame that it is only used by a few players. I hope that would all change when more mini-games are implemented. In the future I wish to see FT becoming less of a clicker and more of a proper RPG based in a vibrant New Waxchester.
