Dodging online scam: my sister's pricey lesson

in Digital Lifestyle8 months ago (edited)

Hey guys, welcome to my blog, this is my first time posting here. Hope you'll enjoy. Scam and myself is like NEPA and rain😅(here in Nigeria, once the weather becomes cloudy or rain starts falling, electricity will be interrupted)

I can't remember ever being a victim of internet fraud because I don't easily trust people (especially when it has to do with money) not to talk of trusting the internet. As I said I haven't fallen victim of scam but my younger sister and I'll tell you the story.

So this happened while we were at the university, I schooled at Ondo state university while she was at University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She just got a phone few weeks before she gained admission and also just opened a bank account, when she was in school she got a call from someone claiming to be from the bank that they want to verify something in her account and help fix am issue. She didn't know they were scammers, so she told them all her bank details and that's how her account was wiped of every penny she had. She called home and informed them of what happened and trust Nigerian parents, that's the time they will even add salt to your wound.

They didn't send her any money again, according to them they wanted to teach her a lesson not to trust people and banks always say we can't call you and ask for your details. She was in school and couldn't get a penny from mom and dad, I and our elder sister had to support her with what we had till our parents head cooled down. I'm pretty sure she learnt from this because before she buys something online she does a lot of investing, anyways as for me ooo I can't buy anything online I'll prefer to look for it in the market.

TIPS I USE TO STAY SAFE AND SECURE ONLINE
I won't really say I have tips to stay safe but some of the things I do:

  • I don't click on any link that promises heaven and earth. The phone I'm using currently, I can't remember if I was the one that set it so or that is how it came but the phone doesn't download messages from strange numbers, instead I'll get a notification that someone is trying to send me a message and I'll have to download it myself, incase you're wondering... I don't download the messages.

Images 1&2 are screenshots from my phone.
All images were properly sourced.

That must have been quite the painful experience for your sister. Experience is a better teacher indeed and I bet she is extra cautious after that.

She definitely is very cautious. Thanks for stopping by
