Lightweight Travel Tip #10: Shave a few grams

In this Lightweight Travel Tip we talk male grooming. An electric razor is heavy. Disposible razors are a good choice and, with some care, the heads are replaceable. On a two week trip, I took one disposible razor and two spare heads I took from other liberated razors.

Lightweight Travel Tips is a series of short videos where I showcase the lightweight travel philosophy by discussing specific situations. The individual tips are gateways to the lightweight travel mindset.

I can recall my first trip overseas with overweight suitcases full of things I never used. Even though I have larger baggage allowances than ever, I take less. Less luggage makes it easier to move around, and I'm less likely to lose an item because I have fewer items to track. It's easier to move through crowds and over imperfect ground.

Lightweight travel tips combine my experience in travel and the outdoors to examine what I carry and if I could do without it. I'm not an ultra-light backpacking gram weeny - my outdoors philosophy is more informed by bushcraft, where I learned to make the most out of whatever I carry while keeping necessities and local conditions in mind. So, lightweight travel is a mindset of efficiency - that each item must be helpful or it should be left behind.

At the core of my philosophy is:
Passport, Credit card, Phone - everything else is a solvable problem of a luxury item.

This isn't to say you shouldn't carry anything - decide what balances weight, size, convenience and luxury for yourself and where you're going! Figure out what is available where you're going - both free at your accommodation or what you can easily buy.

How do I start thinking through a pack list? First, learn about the trip: what about the weather when I am there? What activities do I expect to do? What can I obtain at the destination if I need it? What equipment must I take? These questions are the genesis of thinking through what to bring.

And the biggest tip: Start with a small bag. If you can't make your load-out fit, it's easier to get a larger bag rather than the other way around. People tend to think in terms of bag size: it's the airlines that make us weigh everything!

Do you have some lightweight travel tips of your own? Please share in the comments.

Until next time.

nobody will be bothering this guy 😜

That works too ;) On shorter trips, I'm happy to go a bit shaggy.

There is another good one. plus u get a new, sharp blade..

personally, I gave up razor shaving (even electric rotary style blades) and now I just use by buzzer (same one I use to cut hair), but without any of the plastic guards..

I like that short, clean, but still a little beard look, plus there's no irritation.

Nice! Do you have a portable trimmer you can take, or if it's a short trip, you just don't bother?

Almost everytime I always start with a small bag. Starting with a large bag I have discovered does not work

For sure. I got my HiveFest pack load all into a 10-litre bag, however, it was extremely tight, and I had to really push down on my clothing. I moved to a 17-litre bag, which had plenty of room left.

I'm glad that you mentioned the most important things like our phones and all
Every other thing is minor to me

This is an okayish one. Razors aren't that heavy, and the space saved is minimal. I have heard that some people have sensitive skin as well, and that using disposable razors cause them some rash, or gives them cuts.

For my particular setup, the disposables were considerably lighter than my electric and about 2/3rds the weight of my regular razor handle and blades. Plus, I can discard the disposables just before I return. I used to have problems with disposables, too, but they seem to have gotten a lot better, particularly if the blades are changed regularly.

I remember 10 years ago we also went on a trip and our luggage weight was too much and because of that we could not even enjoy the trip.

Did you have to pay extra? Or did it just suck hauling around all of that weight and those items?

Every time we go to such tips, we also carry all the food and drinks and eat all the food there ourselves. But then we realized that we shouldn't do it that way, because of the excess weight, then the person doesn't enjoy the trip.

Ah okay. For us, experiencing the local food is part of the trip. But, yeah I know some people who simply cannot operate that way.

Yeah I totally agree with you.

I have never had an electronic, but I would really like to... I think the normal ones are very damaging to the skin.

tbh, I've had more problems with the electric razors. The normal ones work well if the blades are changed regularly (sharp), and I use a good shaving lubricant: cream or some extreme alternatives I have in an upcoming tips video.
