What's up, Cinnamon Cup Coffee community! I didn't want to let November pass without sharing a coffee-related contribution with this wonderful community, so I wanted to share an intimate and special moment I spent with my mother in a very special place that recently reopened after being closed for months. I'm referring to the Mamma Teresa café.
This café is located at the Social Security Institute for University Professors, a benefit we full-time professors enjoy where we receive medical care and also have access to recreational and exercise services. The café had been closed for several months due to renovations at the institute, and they only reopened this week. I like coming here because, unlike other cafés I've reviewed before, this one isn't enclosed but rather partially open to the outside.

I was counting down the days until the reopening of our cafeteria, our space where we teachers gather to chat with colleagues or grade exams. But on this occasion, we went to the institute because my mother needed a post-cataract surgery evaluation. After the evaluation, she was very happy because the doctor discharged her, so I wanted to celebrate her recovery from this complicated operation. I convinced her to have breakfast in the newly opened cafeteria, and by sheer luck, she agreed, since she doesn't particularly enjoy climbing stairs. But once she saw the place—bright, open, and smelling the coffee from the machine—she changed her mind.
When it comes to breakfast out, we always order cappuccino. I order it light, and my mother orders it "brown." There are many classifications for cappuccino here in Venezuela, from the "tetero," which is literally 15% coffee and 85% milk, to the light brown, with milk, or with light milk. You might think it's the "tetero," but no, it has a higher percentage of coffee. Perhaps in a future post I will go into detail and create a taxonomic key to the different types of coffee and cappuccino in Venezuela.
The institute is located within the University City, which is in the eastern part of the city. Therefore, the coffee traditionally served there is one I've reviewed before: San Antonio coffee. It's a brand created by Italian immigrants who made it the unofficial coffee of eastern Caracas. You can easily identify it by its aroma and flavor. When I asked the barista, they were indeed using the whole bean version. The image on the right includes a link to my review of that coffee brand.
My mother is very happy, not only because the doctor said everything went well, but also because she got the vitamins she was prescribed at the institute's pharmacy, saving 60% off the retail price. She enjoys lightly sweetening her morning coffee, but I usually drink it unsweetened in the afternoons. In my case, I always enjoy coffee without sugar, and even less so when it's with milk.
Our breakfast was arepas filled with cheese, ham, and cream, which combined with the coffee were simply heavenly! If there's one detail I didn't like about the café, it was that they served our coffee in plastic cups. I expected them to give it to us in porcelain cups since we had reserved a table and were going to have breakfast. But this is a detail I can forgive them for because, firstly, they're newly opened and probably don't have all the utensils, and secondly, the coffee was made so well and just the way I like it—smooth but without losing the essence of coffee. After breakfast, while my mother checked her phone, I went to admire the view. As I mentioned before, this café is on the institute's terrace, so it's almost outdoors, and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Caracas valley.
Well, friends, I finished enjoying my coffee with this wonderful view of the university stadiums, my beautiful Ávila mountain with its imposing peaks, and those enormous clouds that seem to descend from the mountain. Coming here for a coffee is definitely a truly relaxing experience that helps clear your mind. I savored my last sips of cappuccino, satisfied that I had given my mother an excellent coffee with this beautiful view. Now she wants to come here more often to enjoy the scenery with a good coffee! Que tal comunidad de Cinammon Cup Coffee! No quería dejar pasar el mes de Noviembre sin dejar un aporte cafetero a esta magnífica comunidad, por eso quise compartir un momento intimo y especial que pasé con mi madre en un lugar muy especial que recientemente ha inaugurado su reapertura luego de pasar meses sin aperturarse. Me refiero a la cafetería Mamma Teresa.
Esta cafetería, se encuentra en el instituto de previsión de seguro para los profesores universitarios, un beneficio que tenemos los profesores a dedicación exclusiva donde recibimos atención médica y también ofrece servicios de esparcimiento ejercitación. Su cafetería había estado cerrada varios meses pues estuvieron haciendo trabajos de remodelación en el instituto y recién ésta semana ofrecieron nuevamente sus servicios. Me gusta venir aquí porque a diferencia de otras cafeterías que he reseñado antes, este no es un lugar cerrado sino que se encuentra parcialmente abierto al exterior.

Estaba contando los días para la reapertura de nuestro cafetín, nuestro espacio donde como profesores nos reunimos ya sea para hablar con colegas o corregir exámenes. Pero en este caso fuimos al instituto porque mi madre necesitaba ser evaluada de su operación de cataratas, al terminar la evaluación salió muy contenta pues el Dr. la dio de alta, así que quería celebrar que salió de esta complicada operación. La convencí entonces de desayunar en la cafetería recién inaugurada y por pura suerte aceptó ya que no disfruta mucho subir las escaleras, pero una vez que vio el lugar, iluminado, abierto y el olor del café que venía de la máquina cafetera cambio de opinión.
Cuando se trata de desayunar afuera siempre pedimos capuchino, yo lo pido claro y mi madre lo pide "marrón", existen muchas clasificaciones para el capuchino aquí en Venezuela, desde el tetero que es literalmente un 15% café y 85% leche, esta marrón claro, con leche o con leche claro que pudieras pensar que es el tetero pero no, tiene un porcentaje mayor de café. Quizás en un futuro post me extienda para hacer una clave taxonómica de los distintos tipos de café y capuchino en Venezuela.
El instituto esta dentro de la Ciudad Universitaria que ya se encuentra al este de la ciudad y por tanto el café que tradicionalmente se toma en estos espacios, es uno que ya había reseñado anteriormente y es el café San Antonio una marca de inmigrantes italianos que convirtieron este café en la marca oficial del este de Caracas y por su aroma y sabor puedes detectar que es esa marca, cuando fui a preguntarle al barista en efecto estaban usando la versión de grano entero de este café. Mi madre esta muy contenta, no solo por que el Dr. le dijo que todo salió bien, sino porque también consiguió las vitaminas que le recetaron en la farmacia del instituto donde se ahorró 60% de su costo comercial. Ella disfruta de endulzar ligeramente el café de las mañanas pero en las tardes suelo tomarlo sin azúcar. En mi caso el café siempre lo disfruto sin azúcar y cuando es con leche menos.
Nuestro desayuno fueron unas arepas rellenas con queso, jamón y crema de leche que combinados con el café era simplemente la gloria! Si hay un único detalle que no me gustó de la cafetería fue que nos sirvieron el café en vasos de plástico, esperaba que nos lo dieran en tazas de porcelana ya que habíamos apartado una meza e íbamos a desayunar. Pero este es un detalle que puedo perdonárselos porque primero están recién abiertos y es probable que no tengan todos los utensilios y segundos que el café estaba hecho tan bien y justo como a mi me gusta, suave pero sin perder el espíritu/esencia del café. Después de desayunar y mientras mi madre revisaba su móvil, fui a contemplar el panorama y es que como les dije anteriormente este café esta en la terraza del instituto así que esta casi al aire libre y puedes disfrutar de una hermosa vista del valle de Caracas.
Y bien amigos, terminé de disfrutar mi café con esta maravillosa vista de los estadios de la Universidad, mi hermoso cerro Ávila con esas imponentes montañas y esas enormes nubes que parecen bajar desde la montaña. En definitiva venir a disfrutar de un café en este lugar es una verdadera experiencia que te ayuda a despejar y aclarar tus ideas, disfruté mis últimos sorbos de capuchino con la satisfacción de de regalarle a mi madre un excelente café con esta hermosa vista. Ahora ya quiere venir con más frecuencia a este lugar para disfrutar del paisaje con un buen café!
