Sustaining a Tradition

People in our lives come and go, especially when living as expats in a foreign land. We know that. So it's always great to sustain years of friendship that despite all the changes in our circumstances, we still manage to keep in touch and bond.

Through the years, we make sure to have a year-end get-together just to have fun and celebrate the year that has been. We could have called it a Christmas Party, but not all of us celebrate Christmas (religion) so we call it a Year End Party.

Many years ago it was a bigger group, but then some of them had already either gone back home for good or immigrated to another country. We had themed parties, exchange gifts, and all the jazz.

Now, it's much simpler-- just a bbq afternoon at the park with some fun games!

No Plans, Just Come

There were no big plans this time. No exchange gifts even -- just pure fun and food.

We just messaged each other, confirmed which weekend it would be, and surprisingly, it was the next immediate Sunday.

Food!

I anticipated that they will bring oily/fried food and sweets, so I decided to bring some fresh fruits to balance the spread. And because I also knew from experience that fruits don't get noticed unless they are ready to be eaten, I already washed and cut them, even peeled the citrus fruits! Oh, what spoiled friends I have. 🧡

What's a park day without barbeque, yeah?! A day before this get-together, our friend checked which parks that allow barbeque.

The chicken barbeque was so great! Thanks to our friends who sourced the spices from all over the world! LOL.

Apart from the chicken barbeque, we also put some plantain banana and corn on the cob on the grill! Yuummmm!

The kids also had their smores, just because. 😉

Fun!

Oh, boy this was sooo fun, not only for the kids but also for the adults.

My friend brought her board games and many more -- it was mind-twisting. I think I re-activated a lot of dying neurons in my brain that afternoon.

Our favorite was the face changing blocks. I think we had three rounds of this.

The mechanics were easy-- the fastest who could create the given face pattern wins the round and gets that card. The one who gets the agreed number of cards (5, for example) at the end of the game wins.

Everybody was so competitive, even the kids. The winners get their prizes. The kids also got gifts.

We had so much fun that we did not notice it was already sun-down. It was indeed quality time spent with friends who we don't see often anymore, but remain connected regardless.
