In Search of Boggarts on the Longshaw Estate, Derbyshire

in SublimeSunday2 years ago (edited)

We had a walk around the Longshaw Estate that is maintained by the National Trust. After parking up, off we went over the wooden bridge.

The bridge leads visitors through a lovely wooded area. As it's the weekend, we bumped into lots of people out enjoying the nice weather.

The sun was shining on the lovely yew tree, showing up a solitary red berry. The little stone in the middle is poisonous. You tend to find yew trees in graveyards where we used to play as kids. I'm surprised we ever reached adulthood. All the things we used to play around or touched, all seemed to be poisonous! I wondered why my dad used to tell me to go and play in the churchyard. 😁

The estate had activities for children, encouraging them get out into the fresh air. There was a Boggart's Trail. In English Folklore, a boggart is a naughty spirit that lives in your house. Don't forget to look under your bed tonight!! However, the more evil boggarts live outside. You can pick up a paper trail map at the information centre to go find the boggarts! I was tempted to buy a map but as no children was present, I thought it might look a bit dodgy. Borrowing a child wasn't an option....

We came across Boggart's Burrow. For children, the burrow is great for hiding and climbing inside. It wasn't bad for a grown up woman either! The branches look as though they'd come alive!

I never tire of the fly agarics. They are so photogenic. Some have toppled over with the rain that we'd had recently.

All the leaves and bracken are finally turning to yellows, reds and orange colours. It's a lovely time of year to go walking through the countryside, but thankfully, no evil boggarts were found!

Thank you to @c0ff33a for hosting #sublimesunday and @ace108 for #beautifulsunday.
